The Role
Very interesting and a pleasure to work there. I was involved in a number of different projects all with varying degrees of difficulty which I think is an important insight. The attitude towards work was very refreshing and encouraged me to live a nice lifestyle for my whole placement.
Varying degrees. For some of the easier jobs it was easy to work through quickly but for some of the more difficult tasks I required more time to learn the process effectively which obviously wasn't good for time sensitive tasks. Should I have encountered the same sorts of problems again though, I would know the way to go about them.
The support system was great and for the team I was in, people had often done a bit of everything so could provide me some insight into the things I was working on. This said, my direct boss was always willing to help me along when he was free which was great!
There was seldom a time where I was twiddling my thumbs. Once you prove yourself useful there is the potential for things to start stacking up which makes a nice change from my last placement! Great to feel like a valued part of the team.
Varying degrees again. Obviously there isn't much scope to give an intern much responsibility (or so I thought!). I was in charge of whole models for actual projects and felt like the things I was working on would (eventually) prove useful to the project team.
I thought it would be good for my studies but with all the simulation, the sorts of equations that might have proved useful were just performed computationally so there wasn't much for me to learn from. Other skill such as project preparation, deadlines, people skills etc was useful and I will certainly be able to rely on these going forwards.
