The Role
I did enjoy my placement a lot and learnt so much that I would otherwise never come across to in University. I met so many people from different backgrounds and that opened my eyes for the numerous career opportunities I have got. Furthermore, working in a company like Arup – leader in its field, gave me the chance to meet with so many vibrant and interesting individuals and enlarge my network and contacts.

I received enough guidance and support every time when I asked for it without feeling that I am asking stupid questions. My colleagues and manager even helped in terms of mentoring and with support on my decisions about career paths, further education, etc. My supervisor was always there for me if I had any doubts or was unsure about anything, too.
I was busy most of the time and in the cases when there was no job for me, I was able to work on different online courses and expand my knowledge in subjects that I am interested in. Furthermore, there were many activities, presentations, workshops etc. going on in the office at all times.
I was working on draft presentations and proposals for different jobs and often my work was used in the final drafts. I had to communicate with partners directly and organise meetings, do background research and evaluations. On a few occasions, I worked independently on tasks and my work was used in presentations for clients.
I am doing a Master’s degree now and everything that I did during my placement relates to it. I find it much easier to understand the concepts because I have the background and I know how things work in practice. This placement shaped my understanding on how an engineering consultancy works as well.
The Company
It was casual and comfortable.
It was well organised, I had my own desk, laptop and sufficient training was provided.
I did a lot of training, the company's own online training website consists of many courses. They helped me a lot to enlarge my knowledge and learn in-depth about topics that I am interested in. By the end of my course I had more than 20 courses done.

I would love to work for Arup in their graduate scheme and have already started the application process.
The Culture
Yes, there were other placement students in the same office as me and we often interacted and spend time together. The other colleagues who are recent graduates also had lunches with us and helped us with advice and support, too.
I worked in the same city that I did my undergraduate degree so in my opinion the costs are reasonable.
Leeds is famous for its nightlife.
There were many different sports clubs, interest clubs, quizzes and other activities aiming to involve people outside working hours.
