The Role
From my placement I have gained valuable experiences into community pharmacy and obtained an insight into the roles of community pharmacists. The placement gave me the chance to update my knowledge and skills especially in the dispensary and at the healthcare counter, which I believe will greatly help me with my future career as a pharmacist.
In the beginning I felt as an outsider but as time passed and got to know the staff, I felt as having the full support of my colleagues who have helped me learn the trick of the trade.
From the first day the support and guidance were excellent, however when the supervisor left for their holiday, the guidance was taken away so I had to take control of my own learning.
The branch was very busy. Some times I found it difficult to find time to study and work on the portfolio.
I was given a large amount of various responsibilities which included dispensing medication, making over the counter sales, taking inventory, filling shelves, date checking and the whole procedure of 'end of the month' from counting the prescription to packing them safely ready to be shipped. During this time, I was also involved in the needle exchange programme and the dispensing of medicines into a monitored dosage system (MDS) for nursing homes.
The skill I have gained during this placement will serve as the basis on which I will build my knowledge about this profession.
The Company
The atmosphere was as it should be, fun at times and focused/serious when work needed to be done.
It was fairly well organised most of the time.
It felt like the company had invested a lot with all the training and personal development they provided us with.
Healthcare from home
By completing the placement with this organisation, you are as good as garanteed a pre reg placement with the company.
The Culture
We were provided with a training day which was great as it allowed us to meet fellow placement students and share our experience with each other.
The costs were manageable despite the area being an 'expensive' one.
The Nightlife is great. There's a lots of different things to do from cinemas to having a nice meal by the river.
There were no such outside of work activities.
