About You
My insight experience was more like an extension to my internship placement allowing me to get involved straight away with the team.
Having previously worked with the team over a longer period of time I have already made relationships and felt very welcome.
During my insight placement a large proportion of the managerial staff where away from the office for various reasons and I did not feel a stable contingency plan was in place to account for this.
My placements at Arup have been valuable to both the continuation of my studies as well as future career prospects.
The Company
The placement structure was acceptable for my previous knowledge of the team dynamics and current projects however, if I had been a 'new' intern I would have found it difficult to get started with the work.
The atmosphere in the office is great. The team is very dynamic and everyone is willing to help each other. I also like the inter group assistance between the departments.
I feel my contribution to the firm was valued and feedback was given on my deliveries both in a constructive and appreciative manner.
The insight role differed from my previous placement as I feel 10 weeks is to short a time to gain a real understanding to what to expect in full time employment.
The company culture explained on their web page is demonstrated daily within the office with many employees taking on personal responsibility outside of those expected of them to deliver project requirements.
Being able to carry out placement work has helped me in deciding that a career in engineering is one in which I would like to pursue.
Everything Else
The advantage of being paid for placement is not only financially beneficial but it also ensures that the employer is getting the most out of you as an employee.
Yes, during my time at Arup I participated in many after work activities such as squash, badminton, bowls and the occasional visit to a local watering whole.
Arup are very consistent and reliable in arranging subject talks both within the office and at external venues. These events allowed me to network with a range of engineering professionals.
Aforementioned.
Yes, I have and will always recommend work experience to someone looking into a career in engineering as I believe it has many differences to the university subject.
