The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my role at L'Oréal. Right from the beginning I was given responsibility, but I never felt unsupported. The team I worked with really helped me settle in. My initial job description became more tailored to my interests as the months went by as I demonstrated my ability to take on more tasks.
After I found the ropes and settled in, I became more independent, and I felt that the team members could rely on my work more, and often requested that I help them with an area of theirs. My opinion was valued just as much as another team member and there was no 'you're just an intern' attitude.
My manager was absolutely amazing at helping me settle in, setting my objectives and most importantly, helping me meet them. They gave me independence when I was able, and support when I had difficulty. I also felt supported by my team, other members of the Man Com team and HR as they were all really approachable and happy to help. Although organisations always have a hierarchy, I never felt bottom of the food chain at L'Oréal. If yo
Very busy - but I wouldn't have it any other way! After I settled in, my official workload seemed relaxed, but once I spoke to my manager describing the situation I was given more roles and responsibilities.
Enough to feel stretched and challenged, but never too much to feel overwhelmed or overworked. I had weekly meetings with my manager where we would discuss my workload. Once I demonstrated an ability to handle my existing responsibility, I was trusted to take on more as the opportunities arose,
In terms of my studies, my time at L'Oréal has helped me see the practical application of the theory. In terms of the future, it has given the biggest boost I could have asked for, My confidence has improved, my existing skills have been heightened, and I've learnt skills that I never expected to!
The Company
My office had an amazing atmosphere. We often had music and nibbles, but equally there were times when we had our heads down trying to get to terms with the nitty gritty data. I always felt able to ask questions or for support when I needed.
The placement was very well organised from the beginning, right through until the last day. The first few weeks were set up with networking and understanding what the different teams did - which meant I had a better understanding of who to ask when I got stuck! Throughout the placement there were activities arranged for the interns to meet and bond which was brilliant too.
Being seen as an employee rather than just an intern meant that I was able to go to most of the training and development opportunities that were available to me. The majority of what I learnt however was on-the-job, but that suits me more.

The Culture
In the first week we (the interns) elected an exec (like you do with societies at uni) and they, along with HR, planned a range of activities from ice skating at the National History Museum, to a rounders match at Hyde Park! Interns were also invited to the Christmas party which was an amazing experience! In the summer, the office closes at 3pm, which usually involves the team going down to the local watering hole. My team bonded really well and often engaged in out of office social activities. A great way to learn about a new city!
I lived and worked in Hammersmith, London, so nothing was cheap except for the local Primark!
Hammersmith has a nice pub or 2, but that's about it. If you wanted to stay out past 9pm, you had to venture further out than Hammersmith! But saying that Hammersmith does have brilliant public transfer links, and if you haven't got it already - make sure you get Uber!
There was never any pressure, or formal activities that you had to join, it was more of a case that you wanted to socialise with your team or fellow interns, so you found an opportunity to!
