The Role
I enjoyed my placement very much. I was given opportunities to see many aspects of the business and colleagues were very supportive of my development
My colleagues were always happy to help me out and I quickly became a valued member of the team. There was a lot of respect for each individuals skill set and experience and as such colleagues were happy to help out where needed
I was given a lot of independence to seek out my own solutions to the tasks I undertook. However, whenever I struggled with a task, both my supervisor and other colleagues were happy to help me.
There was some irregularity of workload, some days I was very busy and other days I had little to do. This is partly to do with the nature of the role but it was also the case that the activities planned for my placement weren't sufficient for the time I had. However, colleagues were happy for me to shadow them, so in any spare time I had there was generally an opportunity for me to shadow someone.
During my placement I was treated as a normal member of the team and as such was given as much responsibility as other team members. Many of the tasks assigned to me were demanding, however support was available as required
The skills I developed were quite specific to the role, and as such aren't particularly useful for my degree. However I plan to participate in the graduate scheme and in this regard the skills learnt will be very useful
The Company
The atmosphere was as you would expect in a professional environment.
The internship was not particularly well organised, especially from the HR departments side. Some crucial information was not distributed effectively meaning I had to rely on word of mouth from other interns to get the information I needed. However these disruptions weren't large enough to disrupt the internship as a whole
During my placement I was treated as any other employee with no more or less resources dedicated to my development. However JLR invests a lot in training and development anyway so I still had access to any training I felt was necessary
Financial Bonus
As part of the internship, we had a performance review with our manager, Anyone who performed well was invite to join the graduate scheme at the end of their degree. I took this opportunity and as such have obtained a place on their graduate scheme
The Culture
JLR recommended that interns gain accommodation from Liberty Point, a part of Coventry University's accommodation. As such, most of the people staying in this accommodation were JLR interns. This presented a good environment to socialize with other interns
JLR had arranged a discount with Liberty Point, however this wasnt that much, and as such I was paying about what you would expect to pay for student accommodation. Other costs were also reasonably fair, and all my cost were covered by the amount I earned during the internship, with some left over.
Typical student nightlife
Other interns arranged activities such as 5 a side football, however there was very little put on by JLR and as such it would depend on the other interns as to how much activities were available
