The Role
The placement gave me a real insight into what working at an engineering firm would be like. The majority of my time was spend in the office however I also got the opportunity to venture out on several site visits as well.
Everyone in my department was very friendly and made me feel welcome as soon as I arrived. Throughout my whole placement I always felt I was part of the team I was based in.
Support was always given when I asked. I was never turned away or made to feel isolated - it was infact the exact opposite. Everyone would offer support which was fantastic and really helped me to get to know the people in my department very well.
I was relatively busy throughout my day as I was given tasks to complete from several different people. The days before our project deadline were very hectic and really showed me how I deal with being under pressure in a working environment.
For each deadline I was always assigned a section of the work which meant I had to complete it before the deadline and also meant a number of people were relying on me. Although challenging at times this helped me to improve on managing tasks and showed that the team did need me and were giving me real work.
Being based in Highways I was introduced to certain software packages which may be useful to me in the future. Working largely with Excel really will help me within my course and for the future
The Company
Very friendly. Cakes at the tea point every couple of days and the Great Highways Bake Off really brought the whole team together for a break and to have a laugh.
The internship was well organised however at points slightly repetative
I was always invited to conference meetings and relevant talks to expand my knowledge of the department.
Very appealing
The Culture
Yes everyone would have lunch together at the office and also we would go out for lunch every week with students from other departments.
Reasonable
In a business park but close links to the city.
Yes including sports and socialising events
