    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I am really enjoying my placement at Transport for London. Everyone who works here is incredibly helpful and friendly and the work is enjoyable. TfL works really hard to make sure their placement students integrate with the new graduates which also contributes to a really great working environment. My work is quite varied with some day-to-day jobs and then other parts of the job which are more one-off, and these are the really exciting projects that I get to work on!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone really makes the effort to make you feel valued and to make sure you are in an environment that you are happy to work in. My manager is really friendly, along with everyone else I work with. All the employees of TfL that I have met, from the brand new graduates to the top bosses are really happy to go out of their way to help you out and make every effort to make you feel welcomed.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I am given lots of support by both my manager and the HR department here at Transport for London. My manager has worked through lots of jobs that I need to do but there are also some times where I am working on my own and being responsible for what I need to do to complete a project, this is personally really good for me as it means that I can work in the way I want to and it allows me to get a bit more responsibility.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It varies from day to day. Some days are full of meetings and are really busy and then there are other days in the office which aren't as busy, although there is always something that can be found to do! In my placement I did mini-placements in different areas of the business which also had an effect on how busy I was each day.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given quite a lot of responsibility, I was in charge of running the database programme which I worked on which allowed us to create reports about energy and waste for the whole company. Some projects I was just assisting but there were other times that I was in charge, such as running the social media page within the company, Yammer.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have developed lots of skills since working here at Transport for London which will be useful throughout my life. I have improved my time management skills as there is lots of juggling of what needs to be prioritised as well as my project management skills which will be helpful during my degree and after university. This placement has helped me develop a wide range of skills.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very positive and friendly, but it was quiet enough to still be able to get lots of work done.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Transport for London have done a great job of organising the placement. From the start where we had a week long introduction to the company which allowed us to learn more about the company and meet the other new starters. The organisation remained high throughout with regular meetings with HR and my manager to ensure everything is going well.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There are lots of different training sessions that can be undertaken as part of the placement. I took training sessions in building services to help me understand more about my job itself and also a project management and leadership training course. There are also lots of internal traning that you can do, including signing up to become a Transport for London ambassador.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The opportunity to meet lots of people in the induction week when we first started, as well as continued social events such as the Christmas party and informal socials, meant that it was easy to socialise with the other placement students and graduates.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived at home since it is so expensive to live in London so I can't really comment on that but since it is the capital city it is quite expensive to socialise but that is what I expected.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Since it is in London there are lots of different options for socialising and nightlife. Being able to meet lots of new graduates as well means that there is a big group of people who all want to socialise together.

  • There are lots of activities run by Transport for London including things like football, netball, chess club, book club, golf..... lots of different things. There are also lots of internal talks and evening networking events which you can attend.
