The Role
Very much. It was interesting and engaging yet offered challenges such as working under pressure and time management. At times I felt overwhelmed with tasks but looking back it was beneficial in terms of my goals. I was able to work on my business acumen and was exposed to a variety of tasks and opportunities. I was fortunate enough to get involved with the current overhaul of the student recruitment process and offer my feedback.
Very much. I was designated specific work for clients that was reviewed by my colleagues before being presented as the final piece. My colleagues showed interest in my learning and involved me in team discussions. The associates (1st/2nd/3rd years) in particular were very welcoming and interested in finding out about my career motivations.
I was given a counsellor to meet with to discuss my goals and also to go to with any problems. This was very useful and my counsellor was accommodating of my personal goals always trying her best to provide me with the resources to meet them. I was also designated a buddy who was a trainee and was there to give me honest answers on the training contract I would experience if I took on a graduate role. Each manager I worked for provided me with feedback which enabled me to work on my goals.
In my first week I wasn't hugely busy with client work but there was plenty for me to get on with in terms of intern self development such as training and networking. For the remainder of my time I was involved in a very busy time pressured project so my whole team was very busy. Although this meant working a little longer on some occasions, I was able to give valuable contribution to the team and learn to work under pressure and juggle my tasks.
I was given specific tasks for clients that was genuinely valuable to the completed work provided by our team. Nothing was given to me beyond my capabilities as an intern so although limited in what I could help with, my team were very willing to guide me and answer my questions. I also had plenty of client interaction to find out important information which was daunting at first but becomes natural.
We received a weeks worth of training ranging from client interaction to business writing. Personal development was a focal point throughout my internship and opportunities to escape my comfort zone were readily available. Furthermore, the opportunity to network was regular given I worked with a number of different teams. Overall, my confidence improved which provides a wealth of benefits for my future.
The Company
Very relaxed and friendly, there was a hot desk policy so you would always be sitting amongst a variety of people of different levels which also encouraged conversing with new people regularly. Most people were interested in me. I didn't spend a huge amount of time in the office as I was working at client sites. Even still, at the client sites, the teams I worked with were very welcoming and it was never always about work, a bit of fun too! Team lunches were a regular thing.
Very well initially, in that student recruitment organised the induction week really well and pre internship communication very well. The induction ran smoothly and was a balanced mix of learning and fun. After the induction week we all had individual meetings with student recruitment to see how we were getting on, which was helpful. Unfortunately, our final celebration event didn't go to plan but it was still very fun and well adapted given the change of circumstances. In terms of the work during the internship, the teams coped well with training me and introducing me to the work they do. They were accommodating when I wanted to partake in alternative tasks away from client work such as meeting with my counsellor/buddy.
We had a week induction away from the office with guest speakers and training specific to our role as interns and how we could make the most of our time. We were also encouraged to partake in online training extra curricular activities in order to network and further our self development. We were taught how to set and achieve our goals. It was all very professional and helpful.

As an intern you get a genuine chance to prove your worth to your team and therefore the company. It's also an opportunity to find out whether you believe you match the firm in terms of your goals and attitude. There is constant feedback along the way which help your counsellor in deciding how well you performed. Many interns impressed and were offered a graduate role for the following year.
The Culture
Yes. Although throughout our time working for the company we were rarely on the same teams we would always catch up through our facebook group and go for lunches when we were in the same place. We had a couple of after work socials with the associates too. I stayed in touch with the other interns after the internship finished.
I didn't live in the area I commuted from my home address nearby, Train was not too expensive given that the internship was paid. Going out in the area for lunch/ after work was average for a city.
I didn't experience it much during my internship but I am familiar with the area. It is a large town with a University so the nightlife options are good with a nice variety of places to chose from.
Yes, there was something official or otherwise happening every week. The associates welcomed us to many of their social meetings after work. There was an official monthly event with the whole office during my time there with refreshments provided. Although there were lots of societies within the firm they tended to be based in London rather than the regional areas. I showed an interest in sport but there wasn't much outside of London.
