The Role
Enjoyed the placement a lot, work was really interesting, people were great, work-life balance was really good as well. Lot of support and in a summer placement, a lot of opportunities to set up individual 'mini-placements' and learn as much about the industry as possible.
Over the course of the placement, the work I was doing became more in-depth, challenging and better suited to my capabilities. With more responsibility given as well, the team definitely appreciated the work.
Great support from managers and team, for any problem, even if your manager and supervisor are not around to assist appropriately, you can go to a number of people to seek guidance.
The hours were fixed for the majority of placements, depending on which department you work in. Most of the time, there was ample amount of work to be getting on with and finishing to meet deadlines. The days which weren't as busy, there are opportunities to explore other departments and do online training courses to be ahead of the game.
A good level of responsibility, not thrown in the deep end straight away. First few weeks especially involved a lot of learning and understanding the process. Over time, depending on your development as an intern, the responsibility you get given will vary. Very quickly, I was given important tasks and a lot of responsibility but if I found it to be slightly confusing at times, managers and supervisors are more than happy to help.
Not only with engineering and the technical knowledge I picked up. But also working for an organisation such as JLR which operates on a global scale, you will pick up a whole set of other skills. From understanding what it is to work in multiple teams, attending meetings, setting a structure for the work and projects, using software relevant to an engineering degree. You'll definitely learn a lot. There are a lot of JLR online courses as well, so the more you do, the more you will benefit from.
The Company
Very friendly atmosphere, everyone is really nice and down to earth. You will meet all kinds of people. Generally everyone works hard where required.
Pretty well organised, from the induction day onwards, everything ran smoothly. Just make sure to be alert and aware of opportunities and what goes on around the office.
During a summer internship, not so much investment in personal training and development, but the same could be said for the majority of firms. It's more so the people that you can learn from and the activities and work that you can do that you will benefit from. A proactive approach is key.
Subsidised Canteen
Very appealing, the 2 year graduate programme is one of the best within the engineering companies. The chance to choose your rotations and the timescale, as well as experiencing non-engineering placements will be very rewarding.
The Culture
The interns were great, social scene was definitely really good, and with the number of interns there's always something to do.
Not too expensive, staying in the city centre of Coventry also means socialising in the area will not cost too much.
Decent nightlight, it is what it is though,
JLR have multiple schemes and opportunities to get involved in even as an intern. For example, you'll be able to ride or drive in JLR cars or visit other sites on day trips. Again it comes down to how well you network and who you get to know.
