The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. It was in an area that I had almost no prior knowledge of. I didn't think I would enjoy such a research based placement, but it was interesting day-to-day and allowed me to improve my statistics skills.
I felt well valued. I was given a placement close to my home, so travel was easy. They trusted the results I produced and didn't seem to give me pointless tasks.
Initially I was left with a long list of challenges, so that I was given a chance to tackle those I thought were interesting and plan my time effectively. It was a bit daunting, but whenever I got stuck it was easy to ask for help.
I had lots of tasks to do on most days. However, sometimes I was left to struggle along a bit- which occasionally became tedious. It is difficult to get a good balance I think.
I was given the task to implement a new method of signal analysis. This made me feel I was in charge of the project and able to lead it how I liked. Support was there, but I was definitely left to move forward as I wanted.
I was able to use skills learnt at university to help me, as well as learning new skills that I'll be taught at uni next year! I think my technical skills will be well regarded by future employers.
The Company
Everyone worked hard, but there were chances to go out as a team fortnightly. Some people went for lunch as a group - and there was definitely a chance to socialise with other interns because there were a lot of us.
It was well organised. On the welcome day we had induction with about 20 interns; this helped us settle in. Socials were organised for the first evening, allowing us to meet our Project Managers before starting work the next day. Our project work was well documented with an academy to work through.
They were keen for me to work hard and learn new skills to use during my project. There was little official training apart from the usual health and safety/security on the first day.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
The company is hard working and successful. It is appealing to work for them as the employees seem satisfied. Other interns have said that offers of internships for following years are made.
The Culture
Yes. We organised fortnightly drinks up in London. The group of us based in Guildford had lunch together most days; which was a great chance to find out about what the others were doing.
As it was outside London, going out was not too expensive but it was quite casual pubs and bars. The living costs were low as I was based close enough to live with my parents and the lunches at the company canteen were subsidised.
We only socialised casually after work in pubs, which was a good chance to spend time with colleagues in the team.
Sailing and charity events were advertised well, they had a good network to let employees know about events.
