The Role
I very much enjoyed the 3 months i spent in the powertrain department at JLR. My role was varied and interesting and not extremely intense so that i could fully appreciate the new skills and experience i was gaining. It was an extremely useful insight into the life of a design and release engineer at JLR. There was also plenty of opportunity to go above and beyond what they were expecting.
My colleagues were very supportive when i needed assistance and were very happy for me to offer them help outside my role in times i was short of tasks. They were very complementary in times that i did good work, and understanding and reassuring if i was not quite understanding other tasks. The atmosphere in the office was nice and not intimidating and there was also a team BBQ that i was invited to, which made me feel included as a member of the team.
Guidance and support was excellent, especially considering the business of the staff. they were willing to put aside time to help or check my progress with little notice.
Usually i was as busy as i wanted to be. Personally i got through most tasks much quicker than my supervisor was expecting, but was more than happy to spend time doing background research with papers that were given to me by various members from the team. When my supervisor/manager were on holiday, i became less busy, but due to the timing of my placement this was understandable. I still had things to do but not as much as usual.
After proving myself with the basics, i was trusted with a lot of responsibility. This included preparing presentations for senior management, writing reports for suppliers/senior management on major issues, and leading a process change in an engine build manual by independently liaising with members of other teams and departments.
I have learned to organise my time better, and have a real drive to become an engineer in the automotive sector, something that i was unsure about before entering the internship.
The Company
There was a relatively good balance of work to fun in the office. Humour was good and there was opportunity for chats now and then to break up the day.
The placement was well organised by the company as a whole. There was a mix up which meant company mentors were not available to 3 month placement students. After getting through things quickly in my team, they were able to react and give me more tasks
there was opportunity to attend training days or enrichment events i believe, but it could have been made clearer exactly how to access these. Company laptops were given, but mine was old and quite slow.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing, i gained an understanding of the diverse nature of the company. It seems event whilst at JLR, i could work for any part of the automotive design process i desire.
The Culture
There was plenty of opportunity to socialise with other students as halls were provided at discounted rates to stay in. during the working day it was difficult for me personally to socialise with students in the department.
subsidised halls were reasonably affordable and bills were all inclusive.
Coventry was reasonable for pubs/clubs
not a great deal
