The Role
I was able to get very involved with the team I worked with. I became friends with a lot of the office and always felt welcome from the start. I was invited to work socials and felt very much part of the company. This was one of the highlights.
I always felt valued by my colleagues thought the course of my placement. They were always making sure I was fitting in and constantly trying to find work for me to do when I'd finished tasks.
The support given to me during my time at Arup was fantastic. I am now doing my final year disertation for Arup so this goes to show not only was I given support during my placement but I am still recieving help now that it is finished.
The office I was working in was experience a big dry spell with work during my time at the placement. This was due to a postponing of a big project that was supposed to be under way while I was there. For this reason I did not have much work to do every day but as afore mentioned my colleagues were always happy to find me jobs if they could.
As with all placements at the beginning of my time there I was not given any jobs of real responsibility. However once I became familiarised with the standard of work that need to be produced my work load became increasingly more 'important'.
My CAD skills developed by this placement will certainly help in future and also I became more familiar with design codes.
The Company
Always happy and most of the time relatively relaxed. Even at times where people were stressed with high workloads there was always time for a few jokes.
It took a little while for me to understand my role in the office. A description or maybe a full induction day explaining what you will be doing and who you would be mainly working with would have helped.
Arup has a great range of online lectures and forums etc which are a great way to further your knowledge in the professional world during your placement.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
I would love to work for Arup in the future.
The Culture
I lived with my fellow placement colleague for a few days in between house moves and we got on very well all placement. However as it was a small office there were only two of us.
The city I worked in was cheap. Well compared to London that is.
Great.
Yes plenty.
