The Role
Throughly enjoyed the placement, lots of support from the team and my line manager. Always given interesting working which I felt like I was helping towards. Enjoyed working for such a well renowned company that offers such a good placement experience.
I felt very valued by the whole team. From the graduates to the most senior I was made to feel part of the team and very at home. I felt very valued by the team and in the feedback I received, and I was always offered more work constantly,
I was given a line manager who offered me support throughout the whole internship. Whenever I needed a hand with anything I was offered and regular catch ups were set. I feel as if my manager made a personal effort to ensue I was having a good placement. The rest of the senior team were also been helpful.
I found myself very busy on a day to day basis. I was constantly asked for a hand on new work and couldn't always help as I was so bombarded, I enjoyed beyond kept busy. Unlike other internships I was made sure I was busy by others and given more work when needed.
I was given responsibility in all the work I was given and left alone to do my own work with feedback at the end. I felt very trusted and valued and was constantly asked for repeat work on projects I had complete responsibility on.
I developed new skills and grew on ones I already had. This will assist me in my degree as it has grown my confidence and leadership skills, it has also grew my presentation skills. These skills will help me for the future as I will be able to transfer them easily enough.
The Company
The office was extremely fun to work in with a great atmosphere and real buzz. I enjoyed coming In everyday to see friendly faces and people working, collaborating and talking. The office seems relaxed but also as if everyone was hard at work. There was always something going on, with events to show diversity or cakes on Friday.
The placement was well organised from the beginning, a timetable of work was written out before I even started work. I was set up with 1-1 meetings with other colleagues and had these put into my diary. I was always made sure I had work and work was always made available. I couldn't of asked for a more organised placement.
Sports and Social Club
I was asked to apply for the graduate scheme, and was told that they were very keen for me to apply; which I have done so. I wished I was offered a job straight there and then but I understand a rigorous process must be carried out. I hope though I am offered a job In the near future as this would fulfil the start of my career aspirations.
The Culture
I was the only student on the team at the time so I wasn't able to hang out with them. There was however a great social scene between the colleagues and especially a group of us in our team where we would regularly go for drinks and lunch. The team itself had a great social scene with a work drinks and work lunches. I have also heard the graduate scheme has a great social scene and the company offers socials for nearly every interest .
As I was in central London it was extremely expensive, but as a result I was paid more, there was a real social buzz around the office and was out for drinks on a regular basis and for group drinks with the whole team or just those closest to me. I lived at home so the rent was free but the travel was very expensive. I do hope to live and work in the same area once I graduate.
The nightlife was extremely good. Being in central London the world is almost your oyster, however more local to the area there were plenty of bars and pubs to devolve in but also lots of many late night clubs for the weekends. You were never short of finding somewhere to enjoy but also feel safe. Transport is very good around the area so getting about is very easy.
There was a fantastic and varied range of activities you were able to get involved in. Arup offers many different social activities for different interests. There was a particular number of sporting ones which anyone could get involved in but also other events such as lunch time talks and evening drinks. Never short of finding something to do for an evening,
