The Role
Currently I am really enjoying my placement, I am being given a lot of responsibility which I enjoy, however I am also being taught very well. Grant Thornton have the perfect balance of work hard, play hard. There are a lot of benefits whilst working for Grant Thornton if you work hard for them.
Grant Thornton offer a lot of social activities that allow you to bond better with colleagues, and also whilst working if you ask for help from anyone, they all have time to sit down and explain things to you.
When I started working for Grant Thornton I was assigned a People Manager who is supposed to deal with support and guidance for me, however in reality I feel like I could go to any of the managers/ incharges for help and I know I would receive it.
From the word go I was sent out to clients and learning on the job, whilst on audits I find that I am assigned work to do and if I finish this there is always more for me to do, however if I'm struggling with work, I'm not pressured into taking on more work.
I was given the right amount of responsibility whilst on placement, I am responsible for all the work I produce however my work is always reviewed by seniors and I am given feedback so I can constantly learn.
I can't promote a placement year enough. Although it is tough to put university on hold for a year, once I started placement I soon realised the skills I was learning were going to benefit me loads. I am getting the chance to have first hand experience of all the theory I have learnt at university, and really get to understand it. I also learn skills such as making the most of my day and being able to work to deadline, which I know are going to stand me well for when I go back to university.
The Company
There is a ping pong table in the kitchen of the office, which is always good fun. At lunch time everyone will all sit together, which is nice as you get to know people better. The atmosphere in the office is always fun and people are always up for a laugh.
When I first started there were a few teething problems due to the unusual high intake Grant Thornton had taken on, however this was quickly resolved and apart from that there has been a really good structure to my placement year, there is enough guidance in place for me, however if there is something that I would specifically like to do there is flexibility for me to choose that.
We do all the training that the graduates do, if not more. We are expected to learn whilst we are here, it's not just a year off uni. Grant Thornton will also teach you all the skills you need to do your work

If I impress throughout the year, then there is a possibility that I could be offered a job.
The Culture
Yes. We have placement events for all the placement students in the UK, so you get to know the other placement students well who you can relate to and get on with really well. Also there is a very good social scene in the Liverpool office, if you are wanting to go for a drink, there is always someone who will go with you.
As I moved home for the year, I was paying minimal rent, however I do know that the placement students/graduates who rented accomodation in Liverpool found it quite cheap and had expendable income.
Amazing, the office is round the corner from Liverpool city centre.
There is always opportunities and if there isn't an activity running that you want, Grant Thornton encourage you to start it up and will fund it.
