The Role
Really enojoed the atmosphere, easy-going nature of employees, and structure of the program.
Obviously would not be given extremely important tasks. However, work I have done has been used in presentations for the team I work in which makes me feel valuable.
Any questions I had were answered in a timely fashion, whether they were trivial or complex in nature. I felt I could approach anyone on the team as long as I had done preliminary research first.
There levels of work pending varied throughout the internship. Some days were extremely busy with tight deadlines, whereas others were spent reading and learning about different parts of the team.
Responsibility increased as my time in the team increased. Although I would have preferred more responsiblity at the start, it made sense to let myself settle before attempting work that required more attention to detail.
The working life, environment is very different to university. I feel it has definitely given me a broad understanding of what it is like to have a job, and given me a head start over others applying for the first time after graduation.
The Company
The atmosphere is professional yet relaxed, very different to what I had expected - high pressure, longer hours. i think this is down to the workforce.
I was very pleased with the amount of intern events that were organised throughout the program. However, a rotation, even for a day would have even further improved my understanding of different teams within the division I interned in.
Classroom based training was very well-organised and timely introduced before the start of day-to-day office tasks. This enabled all the interns to be on a similar knowledge level in terms of technicalities of the bank, as well as focus on the appropriate competencies to work on throughout the internship, such as communication through the continued emphasis on networking.
At the moment, the impeding dip in global economic growth has put pressure on hiring streams within the bank. However, I am hopeful that I will get a position in the graduate program, as this would not only acertain a job for after graduation, but be rewarding after been put through the internship program!
The Culture
All of the interns within my division were very approachable, and easy to get along with. However, there is room for improvement with regard to more cross-divisional interactions such as the CSR day, as I thought the segregation although justifiable, should not have been there throughout.
Venues around the bank attract bank employees. As a result, socialising is very expensive for an intern. However, I have been fortunate to go out with both interns and people working at the bank!
Although there are a number of venues, most if not all were very pricey and did not cater for younger people such as ourselves. Nevertheless I do see good potential for actual employees of the bank.
I was able to integrate with both my team and subdivision, of which there have been numerous events organised outside working hours.
