The Role
I enjoyed my placement at Grant Thornton. The people were welcoming and very helpful with any questions I had. I was treated well as an employee. I really enjoyed being in london over the summer, and being in such an exciting firm at an exciting time. The 2 day trip to Bradenham Manor was a great way of meeting the other interns, learning, and getting relaxed about working in the City.
My collegues would trust me with tasks and gave me responsibility. There was regular social events which I was always invited to and expected to attend which is good. We were fully involved in the Audit day out and never felt like I was just an intern that was given boring or menial jobs.
There was regular contact with managers, and they were extremely approachable with questions and problems that I had. We were taken for lunch and drinks to discuss our progress. I got to know many different managers and the open layout of the office meant that nobody was hidden that I was made to feel scared of a manager
At the start of the internship I was not very busy at all. After the first few weeks I had more to do, but felt there could have been more for the interns to be doing. Perhaps this was due to it being the quiet season. I feel more thought could have been put in to the jobs we were placed on so that we definitely always had work to do. Some days I only had about 2 hours of work to do
I was given some responsibility and had some limited client interaction. I feel this could be improved, but understand that interns cannot have too much real responsibility due to their skill level. Again, if we had been busier then that would have naturally given us more responsibility and made the time more enjoyable.
It has given me skills of interaction in the workplace, as well as how to always be professional. It has helped me understand the complexity of businesses and how their sectors expand into places you would not imagine just by looking at them initially. It has helped me to analyse situations in more depth.
The Company
The open layout meant that people could chat and help each other with queries easily. Everyone was freindly and offered to do drinks rounds. This was also a good way of meeting new people which can be daunting in an open plan area. The managers would come round and chat, help out with problems and make the atmosphere an enjoyable place
It was all well organised except for the actual work that we were set. Often I had nothing to do which left me fairly bored at times. I feel there could have been some back up work in place for us to do in case we did not have anything to do on our actual jobs. Other than that everything was fantastic and they made lots of opportunities to meet the other interns as well as getting exposure around the firm.
I feel the investment was good and it was clear the aim of the internship was to hire people after university. This is good that the firm is making that clear, so there is an incentive to work hard and impress colleagues. There was regular catch ups to see how we were doing and what we could be doing better which made me feel valued.

I got a graduate job so job prospects are very strong. This is the main positive of the internship, and they show you the pathways you may wish to make throughout your career. Career guidance was strong and there was always interest from Grant Thornton to get you involved in the firm in the future
The Culture
the social scene was good with regular drinks and events. The summer was a good time for this in particular and is something that attracted me to grant thornton. Sporting events were also regular which will be great once I start working for them. I easily met new people and friends from different departments.
It was expensive. Being in London is expensive. The perks of being in london outweigh the costs though and the salary was enough to cover costs and leave some money to be saved. The starting salary is also good enough to live and socialise. Moving up through the firm has great financial benefits too.
I did not experience the night life but i am sure it is great. There is always somewhere to go which i will get stuck in to once I start graduate work. Evening drinks were common and this was an easy and good way of meeting colleagues in a relaxed atmosphere and gave me confidence.
there were regular emails about sporting fixtures which I got involved with as well as projects, day trips, away days and away jobs.
