The Role
It was an amazing hands-on experience. They try their best to familiarise all employees with projects are being carried out
Most of my closest colleagues have treated me more like a friend than just a 9-5 colleague. By the end of the year I acquired a new family. I also feel that this placement provided invaluable network for future job prospects
My supervisor gave me support throughout the placement although there have been ups and downs. Luckily, both lab assistants and my line manager were more than happy to negotiate and resolve any issues that arised at the time.
Depending on the experiment I may have been running or the analysis that had to be done. There were days were I would spend the whole morning in the lab and the rest of the day was office based. Other times I would spend a whole week ,just being in the lab.
I was given full responsibility of my project but would get help very easily if needed.
Being in such a high profile placement, the facilities offered are far from anything we would experience in academia due to the funds available. Getting to learn all the tricks and tips in the lab from established scientists and handling equipment that are over the average person's annual income was an unforgettable experience . I have used techniques which I had to study during my degree ,and doing it in real life, with all the possibilities of getting it wrong or the experiment not working and then troubleshooting the reasons behind your failure are skills one will never be able to acquire just by studying
The Company
Everyone was very friendly and sociable, willing to help on both a professional and personal level. People were polite and always attentive to what everyone had to say. Would give advice if needed. Often had fun cake charity sales and had a baking competition at the end of the year
The placement was well structured and organised. I always new who I had to contact when I needed any assistance . People with senior positions were also very kind and approachable. Would provide advice and feedback when they were asked for .
Company Parties/Events
I would love to have a job there in the future as everyone is really friendly and helpful. They were never patronising in any way
The Culture
Felt part of a team. Had some after work socials together. Got quite involved in organising company parties. Had meetings to practice our presentation skills and gave feedback to each other via constructive criticism.
My rent was very expensive as I was living in central Cambridge was very expensive, Went out for dinners , the cost always depended on the location and type of restaurant we would go to , but overall prices were reasonable. Beautiful parks to go for a jog. Punting on the river cam.
Not a lot of variety. Better off catching a train or bus to London. Very good transport links to London. Great Abington the placement is located has a small pub. You need to get to Central Cambridge to find something a bit more exciting. There are two cinemas and about 3-4 kind of nightclubs. Definitely not a city for hard partying.
Charity shops as volunteer. Cycle clubs that would cycle around the city in the afternoon. Charity events.
