The Role
This being my second placement with the company I was able to tailor my placement towards my degree. it was challenging but exciting at the same time.
I was working on a project soon to be commissioned. My input was valued a lot and the team I was working on made sure I leant a lot and understood the basics behind the project.
National Grid as a company values everyone that works for them which makes the atmosphere in the office very welcoming. My line manager was a lecture so he give me a lot of help, not only to accomplish the project but to develop as an individual and be a more proficient engineer.
I was working on a solo project and it allowed me to balance the workload and plan site visits. in general I was reasonably busy in an enjoyable way.
it was a solo project so I was responsible foe making it work. This meant I was responsible for planning how the project was going to be run. I planned and checked with my line manager to make sure I stayed within the guidelines and achieved the desired results.
The skills I achieved will definitely be helpful towards my degree as I was doing a power systems engineer job. This year I am undertaking three modules that relate to my placement. I feel the placement put me at a distinct advantage when it comes to my degree.
The Company
the atmosphere was very good and every morning I looked forward to work. I really enjoyed my placement as each day was different and the staff were very helpful.
At National Grid we get to choose our placements in April and start in July. This allows the company to plan ahead and prepare before we arrive. This makes the placement very well organised and exciting.
The company does value everyone who works for them. I was offered a lot of training and was even introduced to the future changes to be made in the industry. I feel after the placement I was a different man to the one who started as I had a lot of industry awareness.

I do really want to Work for National Grid when I graduate as I feel it is one of the best companies in the Power industry. All I have to do is get good marks and maintain a positive attitude.
The Culture
National Grid has a Welcome day where we meet before the placement. This is helpful as most of us ended up sharing accommodation and spending a lot of time together. we had social almost every week.
it was well balanced as the cost varies from individual to individual. Personal I found it reasonable.
the nightlife is great as there is a lot to do and there are other towns in the nearby, this means a lot of choice and variety.
Most of the interns organised activities after work, the weather was good and there is a beautiful park in town so we had picnics.
