The Role
Some slightly tedious work day to day with interesting moments.
I was completing real, useful work efficiently and this was certainty appreciated by my colleagues.
My colleagues were very happy to answer any questions, even those working on different projects, however I was mainly just left to get on with the work and look for my own solutions.
Usually extremely busy, with some days when there was too much to do meaning that I had to stay late or miss some of my lunch break. There were however about 4 days (out of 5 weeks) when I had very little to do.
I was working on a real project with fairly large amount of responsibility in modelling a problem. The results were checked, but I was fully responsible for the process with only some guidance.
The type of work I was doing will be useful in level 3/4 of my engineering degree, but the skills I learnt in working in such a prestigious company will be relevant far into the future.
The Company
The atmosphere in my department was generally extremely focused and quite as everyone was very busy, with several employees staying late and getting in early everyday. There were a few occasional light hearted moments.
Some IT problems when I arrived, but generally well organised.
The company invested a whole graduate training week in my work placement, so less so this time as I already knew how the department operated.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Healthcare from home
Arup is a fantastic company and the department I was working in seemed to really appreciate my efforts, however I don't think this is the kind of work that I want to do in the future. It certainly remains a possibility for a graduate job however.
The Culture
There were no other placement students that I met. Occasional events with colleagues, however I am not that sociable anyway, so not an issue.
Living at home therefore minimal cost, but London is shockingly expensive if you have to rent an apartment for this placement!
Meant to be good...
Trips are organised every few months.
