    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really had a great experience working at Unite Students, and would definitely recommend all students looking for a summer internship to apply – I thoroughly enjoyed it!

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • From my first day I felt extremely welcomed and valued by all my colleagues. No matter what they worked with or how senior they were they always had time for a chat, and were happy to answer any questions I might have and explain what they were working on.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was very busy and was only in the office three times a week. However, we had weekly one-to-one meetings where we discussed what I was working on and how I was progressing with my project. She was always available via phone or email if I was not able to meet with her face-to-face.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The project I was given kept me busy most days. If I had some spare time I approached other teams within the business to job-shadow.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • On my first day I was given my project, which aimed to create a re-designed and re-written Employee Handbook. This entailed being responsible of project objectives, research, content , design, communication, branding, and liaising with internal - and external stakeholders. I was fully in charge of this by myself, so I would say I was given a good level of responsibility.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Doing a three month summer internship enhanced my CV, as well as improving my soft skills and commercial awareness. I got a good insight into Human Resources, in addition to areas where I job-shadowed, e.g. Marketing, Digital, Operations and Recruitment

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was very relaxed and informal, while still being a hard-working environment. People are social and chatty and it's easy to feel comfortable.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was amazingly organised! On my first day I was given an induction plan with information about all the things that were going to take place within the next three months.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was treated equally to a full-time employee, and was offered all the same opportunities in terms of training and development. Moreover, all the interns had an extensive induction and development programme throughout the three months. This was aimed to improve our soft skills and increase our commercial awareness, through e.g. presentation and time management workshops, Q&A sessions with senior directors and tour of their property portfolio in Bristol, London and Plymouth. The Learning and Development team were always happy to accommodate and assist with arranging other types of training or job shadowing.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • National Travel

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would definitely consider returning to Unite Students as a full-time employee

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We were a total of three interns working in different departments who met up for lunch on a regular basis.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Not sure, commuted from Bath

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Bristol is a big city with an extensive variety of places to have a good night out

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I think they might have some sport clubs (e.g. hockey and football) but I did not get involved in that
