The Role
The employees were extremely friendly throughout the entire bank, and there was a fantastic work environment. Thoroughly enjoyed my time there.
I was put in a team and was values as a full member of that team. At no point was I made to feel that I wasn't capable as an intern and was able to get involved in any activity/project I wanted.
Initially struggled to get pair me with an appropriate manager, however, once I was assigned the right manager, there was a lot of guidance and support from her giving me feedback to improve and progress. In my experience, there is very limited support and guidance from HR.
This depends on your department/manager and whether they have any experience with interns. I was the first in the department and therefore we initially struggled to figure out what I can do. After a while, I was able to identify tasks I was capable of completing and worked from there. Your capabilities has a large role to play here.
I was given as much responsibility as I took. At times I volunteered to take ownership of certain tasks and activities and my team were more than happy to allow me to take these responsibilities.
Everything I learn can be and probably will be reapplied at some point in my education/career. I was able to improve my technical abilities vastly as well as soft skills such as presentation skills etc.
The Company
I was fortunate enough to work in an amazing department. There was a very friendly and supportive atmosphere, the people in the department were very friendly and usually happy to help. It was a very flexible department too, if you needed a morning off to do something or take part in an activity somewhere else in the bank, then so be it.
It felt that when we arrived, we were assigned to departments by HR and that was that. From then on everything was determined by the department and for me, I was the first intern there so the department weren't too sure what to do with me. I expected HR to brief the department before I arrived, given them some of my application so they knew what to expect from me and so on.
From the department, I was given tremendous support. They would allow me to attend conferences and give me regular feedback on how to improve.
Working from home
I think it's hit and miss. If you're in a department that know what to do with interns/grads, great, if not you could find yourself struggling towards the start.
The Culture
We were never really formally introduced with any other interns and other than the first morning we went to pick up our ID cards, there was nothing else to bring other placement students together. I was lucky I spotted a friend of mine from university there and found other interns throughout the year and was able to socialise with them. Other than that, nothing from HR to bring us together to get to know any other intern. I'm told this is different with graduates and summer placement students but I cannot comment on that.
It was in Central London so don't expect socialising to come cheap. I lived nearby as well and rent was through the roof. However, pay was quite good and therefore, you could afford to go out.
Central London, Shoreditch, yes.
Many many activities in London. Sightseeing, running, there is a lot of stuff to do.
