The Role
I had a great time during my internship. I got on brilliantly with all the other interns as well as the staff working at Grant Thornton. I feel I learnt a lot about the sector, and I'm looking to pursue my career with Grant Thornton Further. There were opportunities to socialise with the other interns, and the whole internship was planned well.
Although at the start I couldn't make too much of a genuine contribution due to my limited knowledge, by the end of I feel I was able to make a valuable contribution which was appreciated by the rest of the team I was working with.
each intern was assigned a 'people manager' and regular reviews of goals were held as well as informal check-ups to make sure you were doing as well as you could. Managers on specific jobs were also very supportive and were patient were skills needed to be developed.
Varied from day to day. On some occasions I was very busy even having to stay slightly later to get things done whereas on other occasions I was having to ask people if there was anything I could do, although these days were rare.
Once given a task to do I was pretty much left to get on with it, although I was able to ask questions where I didn't understand and occasionally my manager would check up on me to see how I was getting on.
Given that my degree is accountancy based I found the internship very beneficial in giving me practical experience of some of the concepts I had been studying at university, which will help greatly in my final year.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was good, with an open plan layout making it easy to talk to anyone if you needed help. Groups from the office would often go out for lunch together and various fundraising and office events helped make the atmosphere very friendly.
The internship was planned very well. On the first few orientation days we were given a full plan of what we would be doing and the clients we would be working on.
The company invested a lot of time in guiding me through the work I was doing. There was also a two day course on presentation skills in which was very beneficial for the final presentation we had to complete as part of a performance review.
I was offered a graduate job which I have accepted.
The Culture
The overall intern social scene was ok, there were a couple of chances to meet up with all of the interns across the country socially with free food and drink which was good. The social side of things was somewhat limited in my office due to its location but all of the interns got on very well.
Alongside our work we all participated in some extra activities such as fundraising and some interns did meet up outside of work.
