The Role
I very much enjoyed working for CAT, I got to work quite independently as I was one of the only ones on the team. It allowed me to get to know staff on a personal level as opposed to just working for them. The role was different every single day of the year
I was very important to the team. As I was the only one supporting about 140 users, I felt essential, I had calls and emails day and night. I was invited to all the social gatherings and every one was really really very friendly towards me every day, all day.
Not very much actually, sort of left to get on with it, but that suited me. I was given a list of different contacts to speak to regarding different issues I may face, but it was up to me to engage with them. No one held my hand to make it easier for me.
I literally never ever stopped working. I was quite fortunate that my bus schedule dictated my working hours, otherwise I could have been working day and night. The good thing was I was not expected to be on call or anything like that, so I could leave the job at the office.
I was solely supporting about 140 different users in 5 counties around the world. The responsibility was huge but it was quite rewarding because although it was a lot of users, you do get to know them all on aa first name basis and that kind of wide net is great for networking.
I learnt a lot about people skills, how to talk to different people with different levels of knowledge and also different levels of seniority within the company, this has been transferable to oral presentations. . I also improved my technical skills immensely, this has really helped me with written coursework.
The Company
The atmosphere was a positive, upbeat one. Everyone was very friendly and we got along well. The general age range was a lot older than me, but It didn’t feel intimidating as they were a great bunch of people who I would gladly work with again. I was treated as an equal, not an intern.
I would say that it was more of a job than a placement. There was work to do when I got there and I did it. So, in that respect there was a structure to what I did, however there was a programme of day by day events as such
I attending regular customer service training events and also whenever a new piece of software of upgrade was due to be rolled out we would all attend a training seminar. The level of communication and information provided on a daily basis was very high. The required learning never ever stopped
Above 25 days holiday
Not very, ot be honest, they are making a lot of redundancies
The Culture
No, not especially, I didn't meet or speak to a single other person my own age during the whole placement.
It was a very affordable place to live. I was able to have my own two bedroom flat in an affluent area. Very close to town and to the train station which was good for trips back to university. There are many different supermarkets to choose form so food could be whatever price you wanted.
Not great really.
