About You
I had an EY Insight Day in Bristol. It was a great experience as it was a pool of few students hence it was easier to talk to people working at EY. They gave us an opportunity to learn about EYs applications, meet different people and also work together in fun, exciting excercises.
I felt quite valued and as I mentioned earlier because they kept the Insight Day targeted to a smaller group they were able to answer everyones queries and also further assist us with any help we needed during the exercises we were carrying out. They had catered the day according to our needs and also set the agenda for the day accordingly.
I received a lot of guidance and support during the insight day. They answered every question they could and the ones they couldn't they asked us to email them and let them know about it. The person who was leading us also made sure to feedback into our performance during the day to us on emails.
It helped me learn that you don't have to be an accountant to be able to apply at EY - you can come from any background as long as you bring the right mindset and skills to the table; it was great to know that I was able to bring in skills from my course (i.e. Politics) to a company like EY quite easily.
The Company
Before the start of the day they had showed us how they were going to go about the day but then they asked us how we wanted to see the agenda like and which were the biggest questions we wanted to be answered during the day. That made it quite flexible.
The general atmosphere was quite nice. Even though we were working in separate groups, everyone was willing to help out each other - they had created a very friendly atmosphere for us all where we could exhibit our skills without the fear of someone else over shadowing us. Everyone was given an equal opportunity to learn.
We had an exercise where we learnt about our skills. It was quite a fun way to realise the things we were good at and the things we weren't. Really interesting insight into where our strengths lay and were very helpful for future applications. They also carried out another exercises as a mock client facing exercise where there was immense learning as well. The whole day over all covered quite a lot in a few hours!
It was very helpful as it allowed me to talk to the people at various carrier levels. I got to meet with people from different departments who were able to explain their role more to me which helped me open up to different options available in the company rather than sticking to the one I already did. Also gained insights into what it was like working on site and off site.
I would welcome a longer insight, but within the one day scheme it could not have been better. left the week with a very clear picture of the company culture. The insight day helped me to make clear comparisons of pros and cons of each culture in various companies. It also gave me an opportunity to understand where I would fit better.
I found it extremely useful as I was able to decide which programmes I was interested in and which programmes I wasn't interested in. It also left me with a couple of options for future career paths. I still feel at this stage I am still open to ideas on what I want to do, but I am certainly wiser on which I am wanting to apply for.
Everything Else
They reimbursed me quite quickly! No waiting at all.
Yes at the end of the day some of the employees stuck around to have a chat with us. This was a great chance to not only meet the other new joiners but to find out some more information with other employees. It would have been great to have had a couple more graduates to speak to and get a better feel of the company and what life is like as a graduate. Also it would've been better if there was an informal dinner or lunch to get to know more.
Unfortunately there were no networking opportunities however during our lunch and tea and coffee breaks we were able to meet a few employees. It would have been better to have had a separate socialising event with more placement students and graduate students. This way it would have been better to understand the role at EY as a student.
We were made aware of supportive networks and social events that have been put on at the office. However it would have been maybe nice to find out a bit more if there were any sports teams etc! We were also told about the EY exhibition being displayed at Tate Modern!
Yes definitely, it was a great first year programme to get a good idea of what EY offers and the different career paths available. However, there was no opportunity to be fast tracked to the next stage of interviews towards a summer internship unlike other BIG 4 do so. But for someone who has no clue what EY does and how it differs from the rest, insight day is a must!
