    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • For me, I thoroughly enjoyed my internship. This was primarily because of the people I met; clients, colleagues and fellow interns a like. The actual work was average - challenging at points and slightly dull at others. But, this didn't matter at all as the people I met made it a fun, exciting and fulfilling experience.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • After 3.5 days of inductions and training I was thrust into my first team and client project. I was really lucky because I had a very good team who were willing to take the time to explain tasks to me and this allowed me to start producing work that actually mattered to the team and the client from day 1.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a buddy and counsellor for my 6 weeks. My buddy met up with me for lunch in my first week to help me settle in. After this, my buddy came in useful for asking questions that you may be a little nervous to ask your team about. My counsellor was their to help me achieve my internship goals, but also to assess me on whether I deserve a fulltime graduate job.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was busy 9-5 for the first 5 weeks of my internship and my managers were quite nice in that they wouldn't let me work ridiculous hours. However, for my final week of the internship, I was unassigned to a client and was therefore on my own doing odd jobs for people. This, actually proved to be quite useful though, as it allowed me to organise some partner shadowing opportunities that were really insightful.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At first, I was still finding the ropes, and so most tasks in the first two weeks weren't particularly engaging. However, once you start to prove yourself, your manager (certainly in my case) pushes you into more intersting environments. Soon, I was leading interviews with clients and performing vital accounts work.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I felt like I already had quite a solid grounding of skills before the internship. But, afterwards I feel ready to take on a full time graduate role and am ready to get stuck in. After my 6 weeks, I feel confident in talking to any client, any colleague and I feel like my interpersonal and communication skills have dramtically improved. I'm also loving all the things I can now do with excel!

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I was lucky enough to be one of the first to work at the new EY office in canary wharf. This new office had mini golf, an xbox and table tennis if you fancied a break from the routine. The office was also open plan which created a friendly atmosphere that enabled people to work cohesively in their teams. The cafe was also great at lunchtime!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • There were plenty of social events organised with both my fellow interns and my collegaues, these included welcome drinks, make your own pizza at Pizza Express aswellas football 5-a-side. I was also involved in a really fun CSR day that involved doing some work at a local park. The only reason I cn't put any higher is because I didn't have a project for my last week.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had nearly a whole week of training before we started work. This meant we were fully equipped for whatever our clients threw at us. This training was done in an environment that meant we able to mix with plenty of other interns who may or may not have been doing our service line too. Before the first week, the only development opportunities were online exercises. It was also possible to organise things yourslef such as partner shadowing and days in other service lines.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Great! I got offered a job within two weeks of finishing my internship and not only that but I managed to get it successfully deferred by one year so I can have a gap year before I start working. Thoroughly looking forward to working for such a great company filled with great people.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, all the interns made countless whatsapp groups in order to aid the organisation of social events. There were a few nights out, dinners and events at the weekends too. The company also put on events to help us all get to know each other, such as CSR day and pizza making at Pizza Express.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Very high, as it was in London. I was lucky because I was able to live with a couple of friends in Crystal Palace for £300 a month, with my final two weeks free at another friend. But, I know that a lot of interns were paying around £500 if they didn't have the perks that I did. Food and socialising experiences were also very expensive.

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife was arguably the best in the country as we were in London, however, as mentioned above it was very expensive. Our nights out included Tiger Tiger, Fabric and shoreditch. The great thing about living in London, is that you can also do other things such as cinema, theatre and visit famous sights such as the London Eye and Tower of London.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • If you're into sport, EY have a lot of sports teams that you can get involved in after work, these range from football to dodgeball and tag rugby. I was lucky enough to be invited to play in a football match with my client team. This meant I felt valued and was able to get to know them all a bit better. We also headed to the pub afterwards! There are also networks you can join to find people with similar interests.
