The Role
I was given a broad range of work allowing me to gain an insight into the breadth of transactions the Corporate department is involved in. The work was varied and interesting and we also had the opportunity to listen to talks from other departments which were informative and useful.
The people at the firm were friendly and approachable. I was made to feel welcome from the very beginning. When discussing issues I felt they listened to and valued my thoughts.
My supervisors were extremely helpful. My trainee buddy took the time to explain the context of the transaction, and explained what was required of me in completing the various tasks. I always had a point of contact to ask for guidance.
I felt I was given an appropriate amount of work given I had not done any of the tasks before. I found that sometimes I could have handled more work but given we were being assessed it was good to have had time to ensure I completed each task in the correct manner without being under too much pressure.
Because I had demonstrated I was capable I was given a variety of tasks. One of the first tasks I had was to research and provide a first draft for a note to be sent to the client. It was fulfilling to see what I had drafted featured in the final version and I was made to feel involved in the whole process.
It gave me a practical insight into the demands of a lwayer in terms of protecting the clients' commercial and legal interests. It also highlighted the importance of time management, attention to detail and being proactive and enthusiastic when approaching the work.
The Company
The work environment was relaxed but people worked hard. It was quiet at times but when focusinh on completing tasks it was nice not to be disrupted all the time.
The talks were well organised and having a trainee buddy was extremely useful. Some of the methods of assessment could have been more organised as some of tge instructions were ambiguous. Getting feedback from supervisors was difficult with no formal structure. Although I understand it is good to be proactive but it was difficult to set a time aside and not all the work came from the direct superviser.
Before starting any piece of work I was briefed on the context and what the task entailed. I was given enough instruction as to make a start but I felt I also had the opportunity to use my own initiative. The firm made a real effort to give me as much information as possible about a career in law.
I really enjoyed my time there and could see myself working there.
The Culture
Although all the vacation placement students had varied backgrounds they were all willing to have a drink or lunch together. The trainees made us feel welcome and we had various social activities such as bowling, a curry night and drinks events.
London is expensive to live and socialise in but there is lot on offer.
The nightlife was good. It was a lively place to be with a variety of places to go.
Yes there were sports clubs to participate in and we also had various social activities planned for us.
