The Role
I really enjoyed the work and the atmosphere in the office. Everyone was really friendly and extremely helpful in your development, and the internship was well organised overall.
Considering the role was Sales, you cannot do much real work as you are not qualified, so adding value is more challenging than other internships. I felt valued as a potential future employee, as opposed to valued in the work I did.
Meeting people from all levels, everyone gave you help where necessary and pushed you in the right direction. I feel as though it would be extremely beneficial even if you were not to receive the offer and stay at Barclays.
How busy you were depending on how proactive you were. I had set projects, daily tasks, as well as having to meet my objectives which included meeting and shadowing most people around the floor. It made the days go really quickly, but also gave independence in how you worked during the day which I liked.
Interns are not able to do any real work, so the most responsibility was helping form market updates for clients. That's not the companies fault, more the role and the need to qualify.
I study chemistry, and therefore product knowledge did not help in my university studies. However, my interview skills, my research abilities, and other soft skills have been greatly improved.
The Company
The employees were obviously busy, but treated the interns very well and always saw us as working with them if we received the offer. It was very relaxed and completely opposite to the stereotypical atmosphere I was expecting.
Very well organised. Clear objectives, and gave you enough so you could fit your own work around everything else. Provided chances to help volunteer and also provided lectures each week on different products helping everyone learn what Barclays offered.
No expense was spared in making us feel like we were the future of the firm. They gave us training and time into educating us in many different areas. As interns, from my experience, we were always given the extra bit of time to understand what was happening.
Subsidised Canteen
As a firm Barclays was really supportive and a place where I can see myself for longer than just a graduate program. From what I saw, many people stayed at Barclays due to the good, friendly atmosphere, and I believe, given the chance, I will do the same.
The Culture
Not many social events were organised by Barclays, but each week the interns went out on Friday.
London is expensive, but they compensate you extremely well so the score does not need to be low. Also I go to university in London so I am used to it.
Canary Wharf has loads of places.
Only volunteering.
