The Role
I really enjoyed my placement with Atkins. I got some real life experience of working as part of a large corporation that will be invaluable in helping me make choices for the future.
The staff were incredibly welcoming and had no hesitation in stopping their work to help me with a problem.
My line manager and my buddy were always available to answer any questions and point me in the direction of the right people to help me out.
Consultancy work is difficult - when there are no projects there is little work to do, but once projects start coming in staff are eager to get you assigned and ensure that you are working on a variety of projects to gain a wide spectrum of experience.
I was frequently assigned tasks and given opportunities to do some project management or bid management work, but as I was inexperienced I didn't always take up the offer.
I had multiple opportunities to gain technical experience that will be invaluable in returning to university to complete my masters project.
The Company
People are friendly and happy to chat. The office is a great space to work in, you're surrounded by people from across the different business areas so it's really interesting to chat to people.
It was easy to get set up on the system and get working straight away.
The company is all about people and personal development and so there were loads of opportunities to attend courses that would help develop my general engineering skills.

Working from home
Working at Atkins long term is appealing, and there are a large number of staff who would vouch for the company. The main deciding factor is th availability of technical work and the likelihood of future projects.
The Culture
Grads and placement students frequently plan social and sporting activities from climbing and football to meals out and clubbing.
Accommodation in Bristol is quite pricey and very competitive due to the large student community from 2 universities. Socialising was more expensive than other areas but generally it was worthy it.
Loads to do, there's a big student community so it's really no different to many other cities.
Yep - there is a sports and social club as well as a STEM group so it's really easy to get involved outside of work hours.
