The Role
I've really enjoyed working at Aon Hewitt this year, and definitely feel that a career in investment consultancy is for me. There was never a moment in my time here that I had no work to do, and being kept busy definitely meant that I enjoyed the internship even more and got the most out of my time here.
Everyone here has been really helpful and willing to answer any questions that I have in detail; my colleagues have been really supportive and when I ask anything they don't just answer it quickly, they want to make sure that I actually understand what they have explained which is really helpful. Also I've received a lot of work from various people around the office which is nice, and feel like I've gotten to know everyone even though I've been here a short time, because everyone is really friendly!
My manager [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] has been really supportive, constantly asking if I need help and am doing okay. He has also scheduled an informal chat with me every other week to see how I'm doing, and this has been a really good opportunity to discuss any questions as well. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] my buddy, has also been very helpful and has kept me busy whenever I've been close to running out of work! He also takes time to answer any questions I might have which is really good.
There were some days where I was extremely busy, but looking back now I perhaps should have turned down some work to stop myself panicking too much! However I did manage to get this done in the end. Overall though, I would say that I have been pleasantly busy on most days.
Some tasks required a high amount of responsibility - or example my buddy was away for 2 weeks and I was given work on client during this time to get done before he came back, which involved getting a fair amount done. I was also given teh responsibility of contacting investment managers all around the world, which was slightly daunting at first but I enjoyed it once I had settled into the role. I've really relished the opportunity to make fund manager contact and use my communication skills, and it's good to know that I was trusted with doing this.
I've learned so much here, not only in client work but also in project work. The skills that I've developed include presentation, report-writing, communication and teamwork skills, as well as dealing with many Aon office practices such as conference calls. I've also learnt a lot about using Excel, and corporate templates. What I've learnt here will definitely help me in my degree next year as I've chosen to take many finiance modules which cover topics such as derivatives and investment management. I'm very much looking forward to applying what I've learnt here!
The Company
Everyone is really friendly and there was usually a good atmosphere around of people tallking sometimes (though at times it was very quiet) but usually it was very relaxed.
Everything ran very smoothly and I didn't really encounter any problems
I took part in a lot of training programmes via WebEx. I didn't have a lot of training at the beginning, but this may be because I was here last year as well.
Company Parties/Events
I would love to work here, I've really enjoyed it here and feel that since I've done an internship I wouldn't have to work hard to get to know everything and everyone since I've already worked here!
The Culture
Yes, everyone got along really well and we've been out for meals and drinks many times!
Not very expensive at all!
Though I haven't actually been out as we haven't had any night events while I've been working here
I joined some of my colleagues to play badminton after work which was great fun. Otherwise there is also plenty to do but I haven't had a chance to get involved in everything.
