The Role
When I was being kept busy I very much enjoyed the jobs I did and felt like I was adding value to the team I was in. However there were occasions when the experienced members of the team were not in the office and failed to give me enough jobs to cover the duration of their absence and I quickly had very little to do.
I very much enjoyed working within the office environment, it was very relaxed and everybody was very friendly and welcoming. I got to watch the projects I had worked on being used regularly and this helped me feel like I had achieved something within the team.
Both the management and supervisors were very supportive throughout my time here, I kept in regular contact with management to make sure I was getting on alright and my supervisors were very supportive in all my projects and tasks.
This varied wildly within the internship from being bored when my supervisors had left the office without giving me any jobs to get on with, to having it perfectly balanced at times, to having some weeks where I barely had time to leave my desk all day due to both office commitments and CSR project commitments building up very quickly.
While I enjoyed the jobs I was given and could see their value within the team, I could not help but feel that they could have been easily done by other team members in a fraction of the time it took me, and all of the jobs were the sort of task that clearly had needed to be done for a while but nobody had got round to it as they weren't vital issues.
I learnt from very early on how to write a macro on Excel, which everybody has told me is a very valued skill within the industry, and it has helped me to better understand some of the IT areas in my course. If I am offered a placement within Aon's actuarial team at the end of the internship then my skills i have developed with Remetrica will also be extremely useful during my career.
The Company
While it was quite quiet for the duration of my internship, this was more due to the time of year than anything else; the people were all very friendly and took me out for lunches on various occasions. Everybody in the office seemed like they got on very well and welcomed me into office openly and encouraged me to join in with talks and socials.
The overall set up was well organised, the induction days ran well and were very enjoyable, the project was an excellent idea which everybody got a lot out of and I was regularly checked on by management to make sure everything was alright and I had no questions or problems.
I find out whether or not I will be offered a contract for the graduate scheme next week so cannot answer properly until then. However within the context of the internship itself I was shown around various areas of the business, I had talks with people in modelling, aviation and motoring as well as my work within the retrocession team.

I will find out next week if I have been offered a contract for further employment, I am confident I have displayed my best work and been professional throughout, so I am very hopeful and would definitely take up the offer if it was given to me.
The Culture
I was the only intern in my office and I was never introduced to any graduates, despite various other interns I spoke to having a 'buddy'. As such social opportunities were limited to contacts I had made on the induction day that were also in London, and the one time a social for graduates and interns was organised it was cancelled
As a student I may be slightly subjective in my view of what is cheap and what isn't but going out in London was horribly expensive. The cost of the commute was reasonable but not adequately covered by my salary (over 25% of my earnings were spent on travelling into London).
I did not go out late enough to judge any night life.
I heard from other interns about a football tournament that had been organised for Aon employees but this only came to my attention after the event, beyond that I didn't hear of any activities outside the office besides golf, which I took up this summer in an effort to be at a reasonable standard when I will hopefully return next year.
