The Role
My time at Aon Hewitt proved to be very beneficial as I had lots of exposure to the markets at an interesting time. There were plenty of training opportunities allowing me to broaden my knowledge of financial markets and the investment consultancy sector.
Being in relatively small teams allowed more exposure to employees at all levels of the firm. I was given the opportunity to perform pressurised tasks, many of which were sent to clients. I was treated well by most colleagues.
Being assigned a "buddy" allows for close contact with a graduate within the team, something that enables an intern to get sufficient exposure to work. The centralised management system is good, however I feel more constructive feedback could be given.
The nature of the work in my team was very cyclical, and the period of my internship happened to fall at a fortunate time. This allowed some adjustment time in the first few weeks, with the last 3-4 weeks being particularly busy.
In a client facing organisation, one does not attain a high level of responsibility until several years after graduation. However, in light of this I was given an adequate level of responsibility, and was given the chance to perform tasks which were sent out to clients.
The induction had some good sessions on personal development, and there were regular training sessions throughout the internship period. These were on topics that were taught internally about what the firm does, to external organisations giving presentations on specific parts of financial markets.
The Company
Being in relatively small teams there were many opportunities for engaging in activities outside work. The firm runs many sports teams which is a fantastic opportunity to network with other employees from all levels.
There was a structured induction and several events were conducted throughout the 9 weeks. There was some disorganisation during the induction with a last minute extra training day being scheduled with only 1 days notice.
The company put in a sufficient level of effort in personal development. The work the firm does means there is a lot of internal research on market trends which are also beneficial to personal development.
Good, the firm has a well run graduate programme. However, I personally feel the industry they are in is slightly restrictive and does not allow for a wide variety of future opportunities within the firm.
The Culture
Yes, however some of the interns were more restricted in the parts of the company they were assigned to. With respect to colleagues, there is a significant emphasis placed upon the social aspect during and outside of work hours.
Expensive in London, however employees often pay for after work drinks.
N/A - London has good nightlife but I have been living at home during my internship.
The firm has many sporting opportunities which interns are encouraged to participate in. There are also many after work social events which are good to meet people.
