The Role
Work and assignments was varied with some really interesting projects that required use of wide range of skills, a small amount of administration type work but feel this is realistic to careers today, most jobs will have an element of administration work tied to them.
I felt really valued by the whole HR team, they were all willing to provide support when necessary and I was thanked for my time and efforts. I had an excellent relationship with the whole team.
I was offered excellent support from my direct and 1 over 1 manager.
I always had plenty of work to do, some of these assignments and projects were self-driven so it was in my control. There was a period before christmas where the department was very busy and so I worked some longer hours, I personally didn't find this a problem and the majority of the time the work hours were a good balance.
I feel I was given a good level of responsibility especially as I had no previous HR work experience. There were queiter period, but during these I could get on with self-driven work.
I developed a wide range of skills as well as improved self confidence which has helped me greatly in further work experience and on return to my degree. Learning was on the job, there was no formal training sessions.
The Company
The atmosphere was professional but within the team we all got on well and were able to have fun when appropriate. The department wasn't too high pressure which was nice.
I think there could be more structure to the internship with a formal goal setting and review process for interns, as well as some more intern events throughout the year.
There was no formal training during my placement year, I did attend a session at HR Operations in Leeds which gave me a good knowledge of the HR structure at GE. There was opportunity to use the online training portal if I wished.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Above 25 days holiday
Healthcare/Dental
There is currently no official HR graduate program within GE, there is HRLP but this is for more experience candidates. It is a shame that there isn't an official program because there is so much career prospect at GE and it is an excellent company to work for.
The Culture
There was a good social life among students, although the location of Hamble is quiet nearby Southampton is good.
Lived at home during my placement year, so unable to comment.
Good nightlife in Southampton, has two universities in the town which always creates good nightlife.
There was social activities often arranged and intern football each week for interns that wanted to play.
