The Role
I enjoyed my work placement a lot because it was an extremely new experience to me and I was given the opportunity to learn from more than one point of view. I met some interesting people and the work environment was, for the most part, very enjoyable.
Most of the time I felt valued by my team although there seemed to be occasional conflicts of interests by different divisions leaving me in the middle and a little un sure who to follow when it came to what work I should be spending my time on. I addressed this and it seemed to be worked out after that so it was still good.
My supervisor was extremely good and as he has the same background as me he was extremely understanding of my learning curve which helped me learn a great deal. The support I was given by my supervisor is what made the placement worthwhile. He was always available for quick questions and did not make me feel stupid for asking basic questions
I was quite busy on a day to day basis but not in an unmanageable way so this was ok. Other interns seemed to work longer hours but I did not find it necessary to work extremely long hours. Again, there were occasional conflicts of interest in what work I was supposed to be working on but this worked out in the end
I was given a decent amount of responsibility which allowed me to learn a lot. There was a very good balance between responsibility and being managed which I liked. This also progressed very well so that I took on more responsibility the longer I was there which was very good.
For me I was allowed to practice my coding skills and we also received presentation training which I think will definitely help for the rest of my career. The coding has also been immediately helpful in what I am doing now
The Company
The atmosphere was very nice. As the office is open plan which allows for a lot of communication both within my team and with others. There was also an element of excitement when large events were going on which created a fun and interesting environment to work in
The work placement was extremely well organised and especially the coordination with other offices around Europe. The video conferencing facilities and organisation were extremely good and allowed us to work in teams across Europe.
We had quite several basic training events which were useful to begin with but I think that we could have had more training in smaller classes which were more specialised, taking into account what you may already know or not know. This may not be possible with such a large bunch of interns
Healthcare/Dental
Future prospects with the company are extremely appealing. I enjoyed my time there and they expressed an interest in hiring me for the future even though I am pursuing something else for the next 4 years. They also made it very clear that if you did not enjoy your particular area of the company, it is possible to move to a different team. This is also very appealing
The Culture
There was a good social scene amongst the other interns although it could sometimes come across as a bit cliquey which I did not like
Socialising was extremely expensive in the local area as it was in central London. If you wanted to buy food for lunch it was also extremely expensive which meant that it was often beneficial to bring food in. I lived in my family home so my personal living costs were not high but in general people paid a large amount to live in the area I worked.
From what I could tell it was quite fun apart from being very expensive
We had a charity day which was quite fun as well as some social events which were quite fun
