The Role
The work was really interesting and varied. I was given plenty of hand calculations which were great for furthering my understanding of the work, and also lots of work on updating or using excel models.
Colleagues seemed to value the work I did, and always grateful when I completed urgent work quickly.
The buddy system in place was very helpful. It meant I had someone who spent time to explain the material, so it wasn't just about the numbers, but what they actually mean.
Almost always busy - often had to turn down work. I think this was largely due to a large number of people being on holiday at the same time. Definitely prefer this to not having enough work though.
There was a nice level of responsibility. I was working at a 'doer' level which meant the work I did was always checked and scrutinized to there wasn't too much pressure to get it perfect. I was given the responsibility of mentoring a work experience student for a day as well.
My excel skills are substantially improved - I am quicker and I know a lot more of the features available. This was my first experience in an office, and that is something that will be really valuable in the future.
The Company
Nice atmosphere, people would chat to each other, drinks rounds, generally quite relaxed.
Before the internship started I sometimes had to wait quite a long time to receive information. However, once the internship started the communication was excellent and events/meetings were well organised.
During the first week there were general training seesions in pensions(the area I was working in) and inductions to the office and the software used. As time went on these training sessions stopped, but I continued to get help with all the work I was given.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
I still have a couple of years left at university, but I am strongly considering Hewitt (or Aon Hewitt) as somewhere that I would like to work.
The Culture
Seemed to be lots of things on everyweek. I attending things such as quiz, boat party and pub lunches.
I was commuting quite a long way so commuting was expensive, but no knowledge of the cost of living there or socialising.
I had no experience of this.
Opportunities for social events and sporting events.
