The Role
Working in research and development enhanced many skills for my future career, however the role was not as science related as I would have liked.
I was trained to manage my own projects and report results back to colleagues, and any feedback I produced was always respected and well received.
My supervisor was excellent, he was very innovative and passionate about his placement students, and throughout the year he was extremely supportive on many occasions.
I was busy for around 8 months of the placement year, in the last few months I had very little to keep me busy.
The main project I completed during the placement year was managed by me in which I ordered new equipment and chemicals as well as planning and carrying out my own experiments.
My placement year won't benefit me in my degree as it was not really related. However it was genuinely invaluable experience for any future career, as working for a global company provides you a vast amount of professional skills.
The Company
Very friendly and welcoming.
At times my work was very well managed but at other times I had very little to do.
The company entered placement students into relevant exams and paid all the fees, as well as investing in equipment for my projects.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
Personally for me I wouldn't return into the industry, but many of the placement students will.
The Culture
I lived with fellow placement students so I had a very good social life over the entire year.
Very cheap area to live.
The nightlife in Burton is not very good, for a student night you would need to go Derby, however this still was not very good compared to my university city.
5 a side football was played weekly.
