The Role
My work was varied and stimulating. I felt like I was really achieving something.
Everyone was welcoming and friendly. Lots of people were happy to show me what they were working on and explain anything that I needed explaining.
My supervisor wasn't overbearing but still gave me all the help I needed.
I usually had several things I could be getting on with, so I didn't get bored. My project was well planned, with a timetable to stick to over the weeks I was there, so I was never too busy.
I was given almost full responsibility for my project, although it was fairly standalone.
I learned Ruby, an object-oriented programming language, as well as a lot about optimisation and collective intelligence search algorithms. I'm sure the programming and research skills I've picked up will come in handy whatever I do.
The Company
The office was quiet enough that I could concentrate, but everyone was friendly and I would go out for drinks with co-workers and the other interns frequently.
My project was well-organised, I was given a useful welcome pack when I arrived and a series of talks to orient me.
I was given huge amount of resources to learn programming and to help with research.

I don't quite have a job with them yet! I'll definitely apply, though.
The Culture
A bunch of the other interns were all from the same university, but that didn't stop us all going out together as a group. We had some good nights at the pub and we would sit together at lunch most of the time.
Southampton is a student town, so it's pretty cheap.
A bit rough, but some of the local guys showed us some good pubs.
I took part in a rounders tournament and the rock-climbing club, as well as plenty of nights out with the other interns, grad students and anyone else who wanted to come!
