The Role
I had a fantastic experience at Computacenter and definitely enjoyed being challenged and the whole experience has made me more confident as a person which indeed shows in my personality now.
I was given responsibility from day one on the placement. My colleagues saw me as fresh eyes into the business and felt that I could see things in a different view. My suggestion and opinions were always value and considered and sometimes taken on board into the business.
I had monthly 121's with my line manager and my 2 mentors. My line manager was always there to support and guide me through my workload and my mentors focused on giving me an insight into different teams and bringing my focus to personal development and getting the most out of my placement. I felt I received a lot of support and care from everyone in my team and people I worked with on a day to day basis.
I would be extremely busy for the 1st 3weeks of each month and the 4th week was less manic compared to the rest of the month. Therefore I would utilise the 4th week to undertake training, shadowing someone in another department/team and focus on personal development. I felt that there was a right balance of work and my development during the placement.
As I mentioned, I was given responsibility from day one and with time my responsibilities kept increasing. I loved taking on more responsibilities as to me it meant I was considered useful and could be trusted to be responsible for certain things. Moreover, responsibility was a key motivator for me during the placement.
I developed a lot of key skills which I would say are skills for life and has made me a better person. -Confidence and Communication: After the placement I have presented to a lecture room of 300 students and I am sure If i hadn't done the placement there was no chance I would get the confidence to stand in front of 300 students. -ITIL Qualification: This is a industry wide qualification which has been awarded to me after passing the exam. This will be useful for me to enter the IT industry after I graduate. -MS Outlook and MS Excel: I used them extensively during my placement and I think I can take these skills into any firm and they would be of key value. -Multi tasking: During the placement I was involved in a few projects at the same time which meant I had to prioritise and plan my time accordingly, This has made me more organised in 3rd year and now I can handle studies and extra curricular activities no matter how busy my schedule gets.
The Company
The general atmosphere was very relaxed and fun. I had the unique advantage of being based at the head office, therefore we always had visitors and employees coming from other offices and countries to the head office. And that meant there was always something interesting going on in the office. In totality I found Computacenter employees care about each other and are very friendly.
Computacenter is an investor in people who has extensive training facilities offered to its employees and teams up with QA to provide high quality training. During the placement I under took the following training: -Present with Impact -ITIL v3 Qualification -Assertiveness -MS Excel Intermediate -MS Projects -Emotional Intelligence -Continual Service Improvement
Subsidised Canteen

The Culture
The placement student got along really well during the placement. Although most of us were based in different offices all over UK but we had monthly catch ups and met face to face often. We made it a point to have insights into each other roles so we learn a bit more about the business and expand our knowledge of Computacenter. We also under took a project as placement team which went really well.
I relocated to Hatfield, Hertfordshire for the placement and I felt the cost was cheaper compares to london. Hatfield is a small student town with University of Hertfordshire in the area. A single room cost around £400-500 p/m bills inc.
