    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I had a very enjoyable year with EY in London. I loved the variety of work I got involved in and that I got to rotate around the different markets and competencies within EY. I also got a chance to travel and work with many different types of clients from different sectors, which was definitely a plus!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My input in the team was greatly valued and appreciated by the managers, who took all contributions into consideration. The job role was very client facing with a multitude of tasks involved – this was both challenging and exciting. The placement has definitely improved my confidence when dealing with new situations and come up with innovative solutions.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was assigned a councillor and a buddy at the start of my placements, who not only helped me during the initial on-boarding phase, but were also instrumental in setting my goals and objectives at the start of the year and making sure I got the most out of my placement year. The level of support within project teams is also very good.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The workload varies greatly depending on which client you are working with. The hours can be especially long when project milestones are approaching, but this is often made up during ‘downtime’ you get in between projects. Therefore there are no regular hours per se, as working hours may vary on a day-to-day basis.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given the same level of responsibility as any other graduate working at EY. Most of the work for Advisory is carried out within project teams where you work very closely with your managers and colleagues. I got a lot of support from within the team and was encouraged to take greater levels of responsibility as I gained experience and knowledge about the project.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I was placed with the graduate scheme cohort for Advisory and got the same level of core consulting training with them. I also received placement specific training during various points of the placement, which focussed on soft skills and working with different personalities. Coming back to university in my final year, I can now relate theories I learn to real-world context.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • While we worked in a corporate environment, the interactions within the team can be quite informal and engaging with various different levels of seniority. Obviously client meetings and events tend to be more formal. Generally though, it is quite an inclusive atmosphere where you are encouraged to take more responsibility and ask questions.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The structure of the placement was very well set up. We received ample training as interns as well as merging well with colleagues in the graduate scheme as well. It mostly followed the pre-made structure of the graduate scheme, which was well designed to allow people to rotate around the different departments and a set review structure at the end of the year.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I had an induction week with the interns, followed by two weeks of Core consulting training. I also received various Excel, soft skills and people management training throughout my placement. You could also book onto any additional training relating to your role as and when required on an internal page and attend as many as you wish.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Employment prospects are really good – most interns that do a placement at EY tend to get an automatic transfer to a graduate scheme in the same area of internship. The only catch is that you will have to repeat the whole graduate placement (i.e. there are no time exemptions for doing a year in industry on the graduate scheme).

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There are many social events taking place throughout the year within your project teams, graduate intake cohort and general events for within the markets and competencies you work in. The social engagement with colleagues after work is very good. We also had many social events with the clients e.g. dinners etc.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived with family during my year in industry so this really reduced my expenditures in terms of rent and expenses. Living in London, invariably there were other costs e.g. for travel and entertainment. Any company related travel to client sites was reimbursed however. Overall, I found living in London very reasonable given my wages.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Given that I lived in London, the night life was really good and lots of variety of places you can go (you’ll never get bored of going to the same place!). It was also easy to get around as transport links are very good, especially I used Uber to get me home after a night out which was very handy.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Internally within EY, there are lots of communities you can get involved in (similar to the societies at university). I in particular got involved in the CSR aspects of EY and also the student recruitment activities, which gave me a chance to expand my portfolio of work. There are also sport societies and market specific roles you can get involved in.
