The Role
The week was interesting, thought out, structured and the staff were all approachable and welcoming.
My supervisor was lovely. She constantly ensured there was work to complete and tasks to finish. At times the department was very busy, however my supervisor had already spoken to other senior members of the team and work was available.
She was organised, friendly, approachable, talkative and empathised with the position the vacation scheme students were in.
There were very few minutes in the day when there was nothing to do.
There were a few research tasks, completing contracts, assessments, socials - lots to do!
The week with Walker Morris opened my eyes to how a large commercial law firm was managed. It was useful in deciding the areas of law I wanted to practice in.
The Company
I was in the commercial dispute resolution department. There was another student in my department and one in regulatory. We still keep in touch now. The staff were friendly from the secretaries to the cleaners. My supervisor was professional yet welcoming which was a good balance. The trainees were very friendly and said exactly what they thought of the firm.
The week consisted of introductions to the firm, its software and the library. Then there was a tour of the offices and introductions into your departments. There was plenty of notice given to prepare for the assessments. Both were on separate days which was a relief. There was a late social on the Wednesday and drinks after work on the Friday. Very structured!
As mentioned above.
Company Parties/Events
I knew this was the firm I wanted to train with. It had all of the high calibre clients of the firms in London, but with a Yorkshire twist. It's unpretentious and welcoming.
The Culture
As mentioned above.
In comparison to London, it is excellent value for money.
Leeds is the third largest city in the UK and is the biggest legal market place outside of London, enough said!
Socials with trainee mentors and the vacation scheme students went for lunch and dinner together.
