    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed my work placement very much, it gave me insight to what the industy does, and the kind of skills that I need to have a fufilling career. The internship allowed me to work on real world project, which is a rare opportunity. I enjoyed working here so much that I would consider going back.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I feel valued by my colleagues. They trusted me to work on projects that are very important to the company. They allowed me to do presentations on behalf of them and held meetings with external parties. So I do feel that they valued me as much as a long term employee

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My supervisors have given me guidance and support throughout the internship. At times I have struggled with some of the difficult technical problems that I faced at rolls Royce. But my supervisors, and even those not directly supervising me, have given me lots of guidance and spent time explaining difficult concepts.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I am given sufficient workload so that I do not feel bored and the amount the workload is not overwhelming such that it is relaxing in general. My supervisor has given me more tasks than I can complete but emphasised that I did not have to complete all of them (which I didn’t and he said it was fine)

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I have been given the responsibility to compile a list of technical data and information, which I had to then present to a technical review board. I do think that it was a big responsibility as it directly affects the progress of their project. However, they did give me sufficient guidance to complete the task.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I do not think that the skills I acquired at Rolls Royce will have any significant impact towards my degree, as working in an engineering firm teaches me the practical side of the industry, rather than the theoretical contents. However, it is a very helpful experience that will certainly enable me to prepare for my future career in the industry.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The staff in the office are very nice, the atmosphere is great and you can hear laughters everywhere. Everyone is approachable and is always ready to help you out. But the staff are also take their job very seriously and which I think is also very important, and it is what makes Rolls Royce a great place.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It is well organised. Everyone has to go through an induction which introduces you to the firma and rest of the interns. The objectives were set clearly and feedbacks are given regularly. There is a structured and formal way to review an intern, thus the overall experience is very nice

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The fact that they have paid a relatively high salary for a summer intern shows that they are prepared to invest in me. There are workshops that regularly keep us up to date to what is going on at the firm. The staff always take me around to meetings such that I learn as much as possible

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Above 25 days holiday

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Many of the friends I know have received a return offer, I have also received a return offer. Since the whole idea of the internship programme is to train people to be future employee of Rolls Royce, we do believe that we have a good future employee prospect in the future

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, there are many good social scene among colleagues. We do a lot of things when we are not working. My boss invited me to play tennis with him after work. I went travelling with my fellow placement students during weekends, and we meet up on a regular basis after work

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I was living in Derby and the cost of living is not very high. The rent is relatively low even though I was living in the city centre, and since Rolls Royce provides a free shuttle bus service I did not have to spend money on commuting. So it was a good place.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife is not as great as one might expect because Derby is a relatively small city and the only thing that still opens at night is probably the cinema. However, the nightlife at Nottingham is great, which is not too far away from Derby, it was just about an hour

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, there is a Rolls Royce leisure centre where we have access to gym and other fun activities. Many of the teams hold team building activities regularly so we do get involved in a lot of things. For instance I went to fly gliders with my fellow placement student at derby.
