The Role
It was not well structured officially but if you get a good line manager you can have a good time. There were good unofficial opportunities for networking organised by various RBS networks that were enjoyable but nothing at all from the HR dept. The work was not varied but enjoyable provided that you have a genuine appreciation for the desk.
Generally, the desk was quite busy so people would ignore you if you gave them the chance, That said, if you make the effort, they will put aside time for you. There was one guy on my desk who refused to interact much with me despite repeated efforts.
Was lucky to have a good line manager who took the time to explain whatever I wanted. I'm told that not all line managers were like this. They also ran weekly seminars where you could log on and learn more technical aspects of the course. There could not have been better opportunities for this sort of thing.
I proved early on that I was as capable as a Grad so they took full advantage of me during a period where most people were taking holidays and our WIP was full. I was too busy. It is important to tell them how your workload is as no one is going to ask. Don't be afraid to decline projects and work if you are struggling. Saying will in fact work in your favour.
I proved early on that I was as capable as a Grad so they took full advantage of me during a period where most people were taking holidays and our WIP was full. I was given real responsibility because of ability and because I asked for it. If you don't ask no one will bestow it upon you as they are too busy and will think that you are scared or incompetent- you need to earn the team's trust early on.
Help me read long and complex docs more efficiently. Increase my awareness of logical sentences in text and how to follow the logic of an argument. Excellent workplace skills such as time management and attention to detail. A lot of transferable skills were acquired but few of them will help in your degree studies- but definitely applicable to the work place.
The Company
Generally quiet and dull. People work very hard and do not have time to discuss the weather. A lot of people spend 25% of their time on the telephone with clients- especially the relationship managers. They will eat lunch at their desks and work till late. People are generally not very approachable. This is a place for work not fun.
Very poorly organised. The HR team is young, inexperienced, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] There were no opportunities for interacting with other interns outside of our daily activities and there was no support given to us when we needed data from RBS to complete one of the projects we had been assigned to do. If you didn't have a responsible line manager, you would not have gotten much out of the internship.
Not a lot invested in the intern. Fitch provided a very fast crash course which was useless. they should have invested more time and effort into our learning as had they done a better job, we would have increased our productivity on the desk. They had access to harvard learning modules on the intranet but you will be far too busy to take advantage of these.
[This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] In the end, I felt that they were more concerned with how you socialised within the bank rather than the output that you generated.
The Culture
[This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] If you do plan on the RBS commercial internship, apply to a location that you are familiar with and have friends. You won't make many friends on the scheme who you'd socialise with outside of work place functions.
[This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] Make sure that you save some of your student finance to get the most out of it as you will have to network with employees who can afford to go to expensive places in the area.
Nightlife in London is great but expensive. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] Nightlife in the City is non-existent but if you venture as far as shoreditch which really is not very far, then there are decent clubs for 20 year olds that aren't too pricey to go to once a week In general you will be far too busy to go clubbing.
