The Role
Very different to the standard Chemistry placement and interesting to see industry in a different way.
I was an integral part of the project team and relied on for technical expertise and laboratory experiments
Supported by many people in the office and the wider business. Opportunities for mentoring by people in other departments with different backgrounds
Some days were very busy and some days were a bit slower but overall there was enough to do with enough urgency that I was never bored.
Parts of the project was my own and my responsibility but with enough help and support. There was a lot of collaboration between departments and within our project group with the opportunity to lead parts of it.
Soft skills were developed well, there was a placement/graduate training scheme where things like personal brand, team work, leadership behaviours, and time organisation were developed. There was also the opportunity for technical training in which there were networking opportunities between different businesses.
The Company
The average age in the office was well above placement students' ages and the male:female ratio was very uneven. On odd occasions there was a good atmosphere in the office but most of the time there was not much communication or fun feeling
Pretty well organised, there could have been better organisation between head office and my office.
Lots of useful training days and opportunities for networking with some of the high-ups in the company.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
National Travel
Above 25 days holiday
To work in my role there is no graduate scheme and you have to have a pHD. The only graduate scheme is an engineering one and not what I was interested in. Was told that there would be no direct entry roles due to headcount capping.
The Culture
Made some friends for life with colleagues. The fellow placement students had some amount of socialising
Compared to University it was very cheap for rent, food, and socialising.
Relatively quiet where I lived but there were lots of nice country pubs and only 30mins by train/car to central Birmingham
There were opportunities in the surrounding area for lots of activities, but nothing organised through work
