The Role
Very good experience, very friendly team members and the rest of the site. Both my team and other teams on the site we're more than happy to help me out with any problems that I came accross. Overall just a very friendly place to work and I was given work which was interesting to be a part of.
Very much so. Everyone on site was very friendly and every single person which I dealt with was very supportive and more than happy to listen to anything that I had to say or any problems which I may have. It was also really great that we could have a laugh and I felt very included in the work place.
I had meetings every week for the first couple of weeks of my placement with my line manager and a few other managers to see how I was dealing with my work and if there was anything else that I needed. Now I meet with my manager every month or so to discuss my projects and my development. I also meet about every 6 weeks with human resources to discuss similar aspects of my placement and I am given small tasks to improve my skills such as networking, presentation skills etc.
Relatively busy, some days I would be slightly less busy because I was waiting for approval for one of my projects to go ahead but for the most part I would be pretty busy all day but not so much that I would have to cut my lunch short or have to stay really late at work to get deadlines completed on time.
Lots of responsibility, since my placement is based in project management I am expected to be confident enough to talk to both vendors and customers on a daily basis. I also manage my own projects including improvement projects on the site which are of a very large benefit to the site and can save the company a lot of money.
The skills that I apply on my placement every day are skills which are not necessarily gained though university itself. For example my communication skills have improved greatly and my teamwork skills have been improved also. The placement has also developed on skills gained at university such as time management and the core academic aspects of my course.
The Company
With all of my colleagues it seemed as they were very happy to be at work which I think personally makes it a very productive place to work and gives people a good mood for the day which increases the amount of great work which is achieved. Everyone is very happy to help each other out and we all come together when a deadline needs to be met.
It has it's good parts and it's room for improvement. Overall it is quite well set up, however due to the nature of the business (can be emergency) it can completely depend on demand for our products to the time frame for completing projects so it can be a little bit last minute at times so slightly more careful planning would improve the placement slightly.
There is lots of opportunity to take personal training and development courses on an online learning resource website for GE employees where you can learn more about the equipment which we have and personal development type courses. This is very useful when starting as it can give you a better idea of how to approach your job and allows you to learn and adapt more quickly.

The future employment prospects are very great within the company. There are several different types of graduate schemes and entry level positions which seem very interesting. The graduate schemes involve worldwide travel which would be a great experience to see other countries and to get a better idea about the business as a whole.
The Culture
There was a good social scene amongst both my colleagues and the other placement student that was based at my site. We would meet up in the city center for meals or drinks and there is a Christmas party organised every year where we go for a Christmas lunch and some drinks at a local hotel/restaurant.
The cost of living in Peterborough is quite low. The price for renting a house in a house share is quite low and flats are quite low also, although it is quite hard to find a flat that has been fully furnished as Peterborough has not really got many students living in the city.
It was OK there are not many clubs but there are quite a few resteraunts, pubs and bars. Also it is only a 50 minute train to London so it is in quite a good position since the rent is cheap and major cities like London are not very far away at all.
Yes there are many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work. There are schemes such as the Health Ahead scheme which at our site runs a five a side football night on a Wednesday through the summer and there is also the GE volunteers which helps out the local community.
