The Role
I really enjoyed my internship with the Civil Service, I learnt so much and really got an insight into the workings of government everyday.
I felt really valued by my colleagues, they really appreciated my input and gave me positive and constructive feedback on most of the tasks that I completed.
I was given great support by my line managers and other senior colleagues but also given a great deal of independence and I felt they placed a lot of trust in my capabilities to get things done without their guidance all of the time.
Mostly busy, I had quiet days but normally if I asked for more work it would be given a lot, so it was up to me to prioritise and handle my workload. There was always things that I could be getting on with.
A lot of responsibility, and more so during the end of my internship. I was trusted with completing really important tasks that I would never imagine an intern to be given!
I actually found that my degree aided me in the tasks I was being asked to complete, however I did learn a lot about my capabilities and developed many important skills, that my management made sure I recognised in myself in feedback reports and such. Mostly, it confirmed to me that I did want to work in the public sector and more specifically for the Civil Service.
The Company
Really friendly and fun. Serious when it needed to be but I never felt that I couldn't say anything or ask a question, I was always made to feel welcome in the office.
Very well organised, in true government style there was a lot of processes to go through! My management was always well informed and prepared.
They invested a lot in me, going out of there way to show me other departments, shadow colleagues and encourage me to go to talks and career development workshops. I got the sense that they were very keen for me to apply and were invested in me doing well - I am receiving on-going support and coaching for my application to the graduate programme.

Really appealing, and this was something that I got from my internship - the prospects of future employment with them and the perks and benefits of this. Many of the exciting opportunities of the work I could not experience as an intern but I was really encouraged to apply and am receiving on-going support with my application.
The Culture
Yes - there were loads of interns and we all bonded really well and we all socialised together. I have made some friends for life from the internship and we all stay in regular contact and help each other with our applications.
I already lived in London so I did not feel a difference, however my work placement was in London and this is obviously expensive however the Civil Service offer internship placements all over the country.
It was Westminster/Whitehall so not really nightlife!
Not really - although I was invited to the pub with colleagues a few times - instead all the interns would socialise together and explore London.
