The Role
I had a great experience working at Verizon. The internship programme has a strong focus on personal development. Online and classroom courses are made available to all interns. My manager was very supportive and willing to empower me whenever I felt ready to take further responsibilities. My thoughts and ideas were always taken into consideration which made me feel valued by the other employees.
There is a very good working atmosphere at Verizon. We all work together as a team, there is no competition within the team. If managers feel that interns are able to perform, they will not hesitate to involve them in their projects. During my first week at Verizon, my manager wanted to show me different parts of the business and asked another manager if I could help her with her project. She was pleased to have me with her for a few days. I was only expected to look and propose some ideas to build this project. I ended up working on this project throughout my internship and was accounted responsible for several critical parts of the project!
10+++ for my manager! I was very inspired by his ideas and vision of the business. I am convinced that he played an important role in my personal development. He is very aware of people around him, understands behaviours as well as their meaning. He did not hesitate to give me high responsibilities and to support me whenever needed. I would be honoured to work with him again.
I was very busy. 24 hours in a day are never long enough! I decided to take all the opportunities I was given. I therefore had long working hours but was able to learn a lot from this experience. This is a personal choice as I wanted to learn as much as possible. Most of the interns "only" worked the hours written on their contract. There is therefore no such expectation from Verizon, this is up to you! ;-)
I was given as much responsibility as any other managers. As my manager believed that I was able to take these responsibilities, he did not hesitate to leave me with critical parts of the projects he was working on. For instance, I was responsible for organising several events in Europe. I went to every single one of them and coordinated the final organisation on ground. It is a considerable investment for the company and I think that most companies would not make such an investment for their interns.
My placement at Verizon helped me improve my ability to work in a team. It also had a great impact on my interpersonal skills, more particularly with more experienced employees.
The Company
Very good atmosphere. The fact that we were working in an open-plan office encouraged communication between the employees. Employees are willing to collaborate and help each other.
The work placement has a given structure but the majority of my projects were not defined into details. I was given some main guidelines and shaped my internship according to the propositions I had and to the initiatives I took. The Verizon Internship Programme is very flexible which I think is a good point. If interns wanted to get involved in other projects, this is something they could discuss anytime with their managers.
Verizon invests a high amount of money in personal training and development. There are thousands of online courses available on the internal platform. Verizon encourages the employees and interns to make use of these courses. There are also some classroom courses in the office.

I would love to work for Verizon after I graduate.
The Culture
Lunch time is a great way to meet new people. I often had lunch either with employees or with the interns.
I think life is quite expensive in Reading. However, the amount of money you earn as an intern covers these costs.
Yes, there are many activities in Reading. And London is only 30 minutes away!
