The Role
Loved it! This internship is an amazing opportunity to get both a large amount of interaction with and exposure to the Funds franchises on the equities floor, and to work closely with extremely talented and genuinely nice individuals. I feel really privileged to have been given such an opportunity. I will miss working at M&G far more than I ever thought I would.
Extremely valued. The level of respect and opportunities given to me by colleagues was above and beyond that I would expect from an internship. Work/Analysis I carried out I presented (along with my manager) to the Fund Managers/Analysts from the Income, Recovery, Value, Select & UK Funds. Some analysis I carried out will hopefully be used as a template in the future and it was made especially clear to me how much this was appreciated.
Multiple weekly meetings with my Manager to discuss work progression (no set weekly time in diary occurred when felt appropriate, extent depended on volume of work/deadlines). Manager was approachable and if unable to help you out straight away (though was pretty much always willing too) would arrange to discuss with you asap. Over a 6 month internship I also had 4 meetings with HR to discuss my progress & points to work on (channel through which you will gain most of an insight into how you are doing/ what your manager is thinking about your performance so far). Everyone in the office is supportive; all I asked to have a coffee with happily agreed.
Always work to be done. Got progressively busier as the internship went on. Culminated in a very heavy work load in the last month (several big presentations). Half-way through my internship I began to do work for the UK Funds, as well as the work I carried out for my Manager. Whilst this was a brilliant opportunity I created for myself, it heavily increased my work-load. You have a lot of autonomy and often no precise deadlines. The volume of work is ultimately what you make it.
High level of responsibility. I frequently attended meetings with CEO's and CFO's of listed companies and was given an opportunity to run such a meeting with an AIM listed company. Entrusted to write e-mails to and have phone conversations with sell-side analysts.
Invaluable.
The Company
Tenser atmosphere than perhaps historically, due to the tough current trading environement. You have to move first in order to know people, but once approached everyone is friendly. Inclusive environment; the internal system shows you every meeting that occurs, and if you want to go along to one normally its fine to ask and join.
Very well organised. Especially liked that I got to be part of the Summer Internship Programme for the first 8 weeks of my 6 month internship. This helped me to settle in and gave me the opportunity to receive additional training.
Got the opportunity to attend a HOLT University Client Training 2015 day at Credit Suisse, received a 1hr one-on-one FactSet Training, and used Bloomberg daily. Employees from all over the business took the time to give the summer interns insights into their respective areas (presentations on each area of the business). Would have liked to of seen perhaps some more technical training, a prior basic knowledge on financial analysis is assumed.

Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Very appealing. A brilliant firm to work for who clearly values its employees.
The Culture
Yes, although not excessive. Extent really depends on which Fund Franchise you find yourself working within. Enjoyed some especially nice (and pretty fancy!) team meals out, particularly around Christmas. The Summer Soiree at the British Museum was also very impressive.
As to be expected for London (& specifically 'The City').
A lot of bars/restaurants/clubs etc. Although pretty dead at weekends.
Multiple sporting away days (e.g. Golf, Cricket..) you can take part in.
