The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed working for Computacenter during my work placement. It allowed me to get invaluable work experience for a professional IT company which has helped me immensely in my career since leaving University. It also allowed me to meet various colleagues who helped open a door for me to return to Computacenter after finishing my degree.
I felt very valued by my colleagues during my placement year. Everyone was very supportive straight away and my colleague understood that i had come straight from University and that i probably did not have a whole lot of work experience behind me at the start. By the end of the placement year i was a valuable and important member of the team with responsible tasks to complete at specific deadlines.
There was great support from my local team and the wider Computacenter community. Everyone wants to help the placement students have a great experience whilst working for the company. The workload gradually increased over the first few months as my colleague understood i needed time to get to grips with the work and the company. You are assigned to a mentor who has
I was busy on a daily basis. My workload grew ads the placement progressed and by January/February (began the placement in July) i was responsible for quite an important internal system within Computacenter. This was something i was completely comfortable with and my manager would not have delegated this task to me if he did not think i was capable and had the support with this. Despite the busy workload i was still given time to go out and explore other parts of Computacenter as well.
As mentioned above i was given a lot of responsibility during my time with Computacenter. This is invaluable experience for a post-graduate to get especially with the responsibility of final year projects. Again this was something that grew as the year went on and i had to make sure my work was being done correctly and meeting deadlines.
I learnt many valuable skills during my work placement. I became a much more organised individual because of my placement that has helped me in everyday life and of course during my final year at University. I learnt how to act as a business professional which i will hopefully be doing for the rest of my life. I was also able to work on my presentation skills whilst working at Computacenter which hugely increased my confidence. I used this at University and also upon my return to CC.
The Company
Nice friendly atmosphere in the Hatfield office as well as the Blackfriars office.
The placement was well organised with a mentor assigned to you as well as a line manager (sometimes the same person). YOur teams will have a role with responsibilities ready for you but you will also be able to venture out into other parts of the organisation if you discuss this with your mentor and line manager.
They invested well in my training with me getting Sharepoint, visio and presentation training whilst at computacenter.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
There is an associate program which is very appealing but quite a tough task to get onto the program even for someone who has completed the placement. However if Computacenter like the hard work you have put into the placement and feel you fit the company they will work hard at finding a place for you in the organisation. There are also various more graduate programs being created within the company.
The Culture
Quite a good social scene among the placement students and colleagues especially if you were more based in London. Hatfield there is not a lot of places to go to apart from a few restaurants. Placement students can arrange things among themselves and base themselves in Blackfriars for specific days if it works well around their work schedule.
As mentioned above the nightlife in Hatfield is non-existent but in London much better
There was a few activities outside of work such as 5-a-side charity football tournaments but these were london based.
