    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have loved my role at IBM, interns are so valued here. I have had the opportunity to find out about and work in many different areas of marketing, travel to different locations and help at many different events. I have met so many lovely people and just had the greatest time!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I have the most amazing team here! I am going to be very sad to say goodbye, I've felt like a member of the team from day one, they made me feel so welcome. Everyone is super friendly, we all bring in cakes and biscuits all the time (not great for the waistline) but it's just such a lovely atmosphere in the office!

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • At IBM you have a task manager as well as an early professional manager. For me, both have been fantastic. My task manager has been amazing and is always making sure I'm happy, helping me to get involved in new projects, introducing me to new people and answering my questions. My EPM has been similarly great, she has really encouraged me and shown me new opportunities I can get involved in outside my day to day role.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • At the beginning of my time, I didn't have as much work as people were figuring out who I was and that they could ask me to do things! but I told my task manager I'd like more work and from then on I have had a lot to do which I love! I really like being under a bit of pressure and being involved in lots of things. I now organise 17 events per quarter, and am involved in projects in lots of different areas of marketing within IBM!

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I feel like I've had a great amount of responsibility, not too much to make me really panic, but enough to make me feel valued and like what I'm doing is completely worthwhile.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Although I'm not back at University just yet, I know without a shadow of a doubt this year of experience will be invaluable! At University, it will be so valuable as I'll be able to apply the theory I'm learning to practise and better understand the relevance of the theory. I also have a much better work ethic now and am able to manage my time much better, so I feel that that will also benefit my studies. However, I particularly think that my experience this year will help when looking for graduate opportunities. From learning to write a good application and get through an assessment centre, to writing a professional emails, to dealing with clients, the experience I've had has increased my confidence in my own abilities so much and I now feel much more confident in facing the challenge of getting a job after University.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Really good, I'm actually the only intern in my team, but it doesn't feel like that! Everyone works very hard, but there is usually always time for a cup of tea and a little chat!

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well, the placement scheme at IBM is long established. Interns get great support throughout their year at IBM.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Lots of courses are available to you at IBM, there is LOADS of online learning you can do on almost anything! This was great for me at the start when my role was quieter. There were also lots of different workshops available as well as online 'lunch and learns'.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I will definitely re-apply to IBM, however there is no guarantee I'd get a grad role, we have to go through the same application process as external candidates. However, if you perform very well, you can skip some of the steps of the process.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Most people on placement here lives in houses together and socialise all the time! Lots of people socialise with their teams too, going for after work drinks etc.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It's hard for me to answer this one as I lived here already! But being in a student town, Portsmouth prices aren't bad at all, especially compared to London!

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Personally, I'm not a big clubber, but loads of the interns go on very regular nights out!

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are loads and loads of volunteering opportunities to get involved in at IBM which is great, from doing activities at primary schools, to interview days at senior schools to presenting at universities. It's a great way to develop skills you don't utilise in your everyday role.
