The Role
I have really enjoyed my placement at IBM, however it has to be mentioned that this enjoyment is greatly influenced by your own actions. The community is great, my job has been challenging enough to engage me and my team and managers have been very supportive. However it is your responsibility to create opportunities which will lead to greater enjoyment, eg. engage in communities, organise social events such as football or dinners out, ask your managers to get engaged in particular areas of interest, network.
I feel very valued by my colleagues. My team operates mostly from abroad, but thanks to the internal messaging system I have still been able to create a relationship with them. My mangers and my Team leader have been most supportive and always communicate gratitude. It has been a true joy to work with them.
As mentioned above, I have been given a lot of guidance and support during my placement, may this be from my managers, from my team leader, from my team members or the other placement students on my team. Everyone has gone out of their way to help me when needed.
There is some fluctuation on the busyness level, however this also is greatly do to with your personal work attitude. Personally I prefer to be engaged and contribute, which if you put yourself forward and ask for opportunities that is definitely possible. Further certain circumstances like Audits or particular deadlines may require you to work overtime, however I can confirm that this has been very balanced for my Job role and work hours have been very flexible, as long as I finish my work and the contracted amount of hours.
I have been given various levels of responsibility. Overall I would say that I have had some great responsibility representing my team and presenting to the management team various times.
I have developed several skills related to my job role in particular, such as flexibility in carrying out tasks, time efficiency, team work and communication, as well as technical background knowledge. Further I have developed better skills in presenting, due to regular presentations I was required to hold. Due to IBM's compulsory 'Think40' education, I have further developed a deeper understanding of IBM and the IT industry in general.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office is great, the community amongst the interns is really good, as well as the relationship with the managers.
The placement was organised in some places, and not so well organised in others. It is definitely partially your own responsibility to organise your own workload and deadlines.
I have been able do shadowing education opportunities as well as carrying out a first aider course paid by IBM.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Working from home
IBM's graduation scheme is very appealing due to the above average pay, the rotating job roles and the fact that IBM is the most successful IT company.
The Culture
Yes, I have made some great friends on this placement which I will keep in contact with in the future
Rent was below average, leisure activities where an average budget.
Average, however we have managed to create some unforgettable memories never the less.
There have been some football activities for some members.
